Right now I have 225/70/15 tires stock size on my 01 XE 2WD.  I want to know if going to a 235/75/15 will make a huge difference in speedo readings and gas mileage?

I got the truck used and it has some Pepboy's specials (Definity brand) tires on it and they seem okay, just more of a street tire than an A/T.  I know the stock tire was a General Grabber.  Let me know what tires are a good match to this specific truck or work well with it.  Thanks.

I did it up, and it'll slow your speedo down by about 5%.  Gas mileage i don't think it will effect it too much.  You're going with a little bit heavier tire, but you can now keep your RPMs lower when driving down the highway.

Just about anything is better than the General Grabbers.  What kind of tire are you looking for?  Just a good AT?

If so you've got plenty of choices.

~BFGoodrich ATs are a very good AT tire.  A very reliabe tire and have proven themselves over the years.

~I've read tons of good reviews about Kumho's Venture MT KL71.  A mud tire i know, but has really low road noise and does awesome in just about everything.

Just look around and see what there is.

kcidmil,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I've been looking locally, and will need to save up some dollars as the good tires are a bit pricey, but worth it.

I was looking at some tires for your truck... i wish mine were that cheap.  Mine start off $210 each.  The set I'm getting next week is $280 each.  Of course, I've got a much bigger truck and bigger tire.  BTW, that 02 Frontier below is long gone.  I was stupid and traded it in on a 4wd Colorado.  Now I've got a 00 F-250.

While I agree that the stock General Grabbers that came on the early Frontiers/Xterras were not good tires, I believe they were the Grabber AW(?) and they were downright scary when I had them in the wet. I know there were a diff model of the Grabber and I currently have General Grabber UHP's which are they "high performance" version, with directional tread. they are definitly a street tire, so if you are going to see some light trails, or whatnot, I wouldn't consider these tires, bout as much off-roading as they see on my truck is gravel for parking lots or grass if need be. They do well in the wet and have gotten good reviews from what I read. Mine were relatively cheap, for 103/each at Discount Tire (aka America's Tire depending on what part of the country you live in.) I know that Tirerack.com used to carry them, but don't know if they still do.  Just .02. If you are looking for an A/T tire tho, I have heard that the BFG's that kcidmil mentioned are good, been around for awhile.

A/T -- Check out the Firestone Destination A/T and the Dueler Revo.  Both are good tires, I have the Revos on my 06.

If you are looking for just a decent truck tire, but don't really need the bite of an A/T, I'd get a Michelin Cross Terrain SUV.  I know 2 people who've had them on 2 totally different vehicles.  The tire performed well on both and lasted quite a long time (still going on one with ~70,000 miles on them).

All,

Thanks for the input, got some tire browsing to do with the multitude of suggestions.  Turns out I did some research on my "Definity EX600's" and they claim to have a 75k warranty...  I know the Goodyear Regatta's are the name brand equivalent.

FYI for anyone with Pepboy tires:  I also found out alot of the Pepboy's tires were made by Cooper Tire Inc and there was a recall on several models manufactured from August 8-19 2006.  My particular size was not in it.

Not surprising.  Delta is a off shoot brand of Pro-Comp, Michellin, and 16 other name brand companies.  You get everything that the name brand companies will give you, but with a Delta name and usually a little bit lower price.

PLEASE NOTE:

Many think they can just change from a P to an LT tire of the same size and run the same tire pressure. This is NOT TRUE! Actually, an LT tire requires significantly more pressure to carry the same load as a P rated tire of the same size. Please look at the attched chart from Yokohama Tire. You can run the extra pressure but your ride will suffer.

I see so many posts just saying "change over and run the same pressure." An LT will run hot at the same pressure you use in a P tire and the load carrying ability will be reduced. These are designed to carry heavy loads but require the higher pressure to do so.

Thanks for the input, you are correct in this.  Alot of street tires are around the 35PSI range and some LT are up to 44PSI has been my experience.
