I have a 2002 club cab Frontier.  I get about 18 mpg.  I've heard there is a rather simple way to change out a gear in the rear differential which would change the 'gearing' so I would have less torque, but get better mileage.  Any idea of how much improvement could be had and where to start?

danny here swamping gears are cool but remeber what you do with your truck if you do 99%percent highway you might increase mpg. if you change to a taller gear for highhway it could hurt city mpg. is spending 1000-1500 bucks worth changing for only a slight increase in millage BTW what gear do you have

he either has a H233b or c200 rear end with 4.63s or 4.38s. Its a clever idea to regear for better mpg, but its not as simple as it sounds. Changing gears yourself can be very trickey unless you've done a few before, and if you pay a shop to do it they're gonna rip you a new one. And gears for nissan axles aint cheap at all. So your probably gonna be better off sticking with stock ones.

A small change resulting in a taller "gear" is to go from 265/70 tires to the 265/75 tires that are, I think, on the Nismo.  You'll do a a few less tire RPMs per mile which might help your mileage.  But keep in mind that tire weight may go up.  You'll notice "taller gears" when towing or going up long grades as well.  Use the calculator below; you'll save about 20 rpms/mile on the tires which is about 3%.

Thanks.  I'm 90% freeway, so I either need the taller gear or a different vehicle, w/ gas prices as they are.  I wasn't planning on having someone else do it.  Dad's a mechanic or 40 years and recommended it, I just don't know where to go to get part(s) or what to ask for.

bommer is right about tire size can decrease your revs which might help in mpg. what is your crusie rpm on the highway. 2000-2300 should be a good rpm food for thought
