Assuming you have an 05+ w/ the 4.0 liter:

As far as the 1/4 mile, I've seen times as low as 14.8 for a stock king cab 2wd 6spd 4.0.  Any other configuration should be slower (4x4, auto, 4 door, etc).

If you want more midrange, I'd look into the Nismo headers and an exhaust system.  You could also put on a CAI.  Both of these mods are relatively inexpensive and should be good for 10 or 12hp.

2.5" is probably fine (assuming you mean single outlet).  Personally, I would not go 3" or more.

If you are going to go the catback route, you may want to consider just purchasing a muffler and a high flow cat and having a local shop weld you up the rest of the piping.  Often this is cheaper and results in better flow.  If you do that I would recommend a Dynomax muffler.  I saw a test where they used the same car, same everything (track, conditions, driver, etc) and ran 10 or so different mufflers.  The Dynomax produced the highest trap speed and lowest 1/4 mile time.
