What are some ways to improve mpg in the 04 frontier?

K&N? Exhaust?

Chip? or even rear end gear swap?

Thanks

..

ebritt;

Welcome to the group!

There are quite a few threads here dealing with these mods. Sometimes they help with better mileage but getting a pay-back from the expence is marginal.

Well I gotta go gather up the reindeers crap off the roof and get a move-on..

Have a good one  and see you later.. Don S..

Just tryin to squeeze a few mpg's if I can.

The thing gets about 25 on the highway at 55mph. It should get more than that. I have noticed that it is geared pretty low. 70mph on the interstate tachs almost 3 grand. I dont really need to pull anything as it is just for back and forth to work, and an occasional load of feed from the market.

I plan on a K&N filter, and sythetic oil if it wont leak. But I wondered if there was a taller rear gear out there for the thing.

Another 4 or 5 mpg would be fine.

What size motor is it? I'm guessing the 2.4 because I would be surprised to find the 3.3 getting 25 mpg.  Second thing that caught my eye was that you said you were taching 3 grand at 70 mph, in my 2001 CC SE (3.3) i have to be running 80 mph before getting 3k rpm. As lakota mentioned there are other threads that touch on these mods and possible fuel efficiency gains, but some also find that with their new enjoyable tones when getting on the go pedal, that they negate any gains from the mod at all. I have found the biggest thing to increase my fuel economy is to be more proactive about not stomping on the gas, anticipating lights so you can use momentum, as well as many other things that have been listed by lakota in several posts before, all good recommendations for maximizing your distance on a tank of gas.

It is the 2.4 4 banger. It tachs about 2800 at 70 mph and 2200 at 55 mph.

I also have a ca39 rear axle and am having trouble finding out what gear ratio it is. It looks as though it may be a 3.90 something, that would explain the low mpg's. Is there a taller rear gear to swap into it? a 3.70 maybe??

I really like this little truck and would like to squeeze close to 30 mpg out of it if I can. It is my "back and forth to work" truck, not my "pull all kinda stuff  around" truck and will probably never see a trailer hooked to it.

I appreciate all the info...

Thanks.

I put a cold air intake and Cherrybomb exhaust. My gas mileage is better than normal. I have a heavy lead foot, if I drive normal, I can get 27-29. On a long trip (all interstate) I got 31.9! Yes...you read correctly 31.9mpg in a truck! I do have a 5speed, so that can make a difference.

I haven't heard of changing out the gears so you turn less RPM's at speed. I run about the same, 2800 at 70.
