I went for an afternoon off road venture here in Big Bear Lake CA,

I was hitting the snow whoops and having some fun in the mud spots that i could find. The snow is packed hard because the days have been warm and nights freezing. As i take a small narrow trail i come across an H2 in my way and stuck spinning tires :-)  I find a small path to the right of him (basically driving on the side of the hill) and get in front of him, he is half stuck in snow back end and sunk in mud front end. I didnt bring any town straps with me. I got out of my truck in my work clothes and walked over to ask if he needed any help, initally he was cocky and said no and that he had everything under control. I laughed and walked away. an hour later on my way back sure enough he was there with a shovel and his girldfriend(s) watching while he dug away. i pulled up and long story short had to pull this beast of a hummer out, looked like it had some mud terrain tires and a lift. Looked like an awesome truck/suv but i guess they are terrible off road?

LOL!  Thats cool, but if it had been an H1 he probably would not have gotten stuck in the first place. The H2 is just the H1's gay little brother.  And I don't mean to be offensive to gay people, but the H2 is meant to look good and have many luxuries...not meant to be rough and tough. The H1 was built for the sole purpose of being able to handle almost anything off road.  Putting mud tires on an H2 is like putting racing slicks on an H1,  the thing is just not designed to do what the tires are designed to do. 

You should have told that guy after you pulled him out to sell you the mud tires, and go buy some 22"s with lo profile tires, and stick to city driving.

You know, I looked over some Hummers at a recent auto show and was struck at how absolutely similar they looked underneath to the Chevy pickup I owned at that time.  I pointed this out to the rep who was there and he got all defensive.  I asked him why I would buy a Hummer 2 when it was basically a GM full size pickup or an H3 which was (and is) a Colorado pickup.  He started spouting off about "stronger components in the drive train.  Well, if you want a strong drive train and four wheel drive, just buy a GMC or Chevy 2500 or 3500 pickup.  Less expensive, more utilitarian and cheaper to run and repair.

Actually the H1s can be just as prone as the H2s to getting stuck... even the military versions.  For some reason snow and hummers just don't mix very well. 

I also hate to rain on the awesome parade (i hate the H2s) but everyone must not forget the weight difference here.  The Frontiers are so much lighter, it's easier to just drive into places. 

I once saw a video on our sister site showing a Titan playing on a sand dune.  Driving up then down having a grand ole time.  A F-350 diesel came by lifted with tires and could only make it halfway up before sinking.  Everyone tried ragging on the forum about the truck, till i chimed in and asked them to try a pulling contest against my F-250.  Not a person wanted to take me up on it.  My truck is just that much heavier and more powerful with the 7.3L and not a Titan in the world would stand a chance against it.

I use mine for towing and hauling.  I do have 35" Mud tires on mine because I go camping.  And i have gotten it stuck before, it sucks majorly.  I'm not above asking for help though.  I know the weight had to do a lot with me being unable to get out.  Had I had the frontier or Titan, i probably wouldn't even have gotten stuck.  But that 7.3L weighs so much it just kept burying my front end farther into the mud.  

I do applaude trevor for helping though.  I know many people won't even bother to ask and will do their best to avoid the situation. 

So next time you come onto someone stuck like that, have your chuckle.  (because that H2 is funny as hell)  But be prepared for that humbling experience for when you finally get your frontier stuck in a ditch or something, and someone with a bigger truck comes by and hauls your butt out of there.

I'm with you on that, the weight difference on these vehicles are completely different. I do find it funny though when people buy these to offroad with then scratch their heads when they get stuck / break.

I thought the dry creek bed video was a riot, simple components like that shouldn't just snap on you. Maybe someone forgot to reinstall the skid plate after doing some maintenance?

My frontier for one SUCKS in the snow w/out 4wd. If there's even a slight angle and I'm trying to start from dead stop I need 4wd. It's a truck and there's basically no weight in the rear. Doing doughnuts in a parking lot, if I spin badly I can get stuck on a flat surface. The 4wd rocks though, frontier + 2wd forget it.

KC, I see both sides and by no means was trying to pick a fight. Vehicles have their purposes for different applications. I think a fronty is a great all round truck. We have power, decent tow ratings, mpg and style. If I was gonna tow a house I'de get a diesel but wouldn't expect to take it to far on the beach. Best truck I ever took on the beach was my brothers 91 toyota with 4cyl and 31's. I used 4wd once on this truck, it was simply amazing.

try a different set of tires.  I ran around in the South Dakota winters in my Frontier 2wd for almost 4 years, and only got stuck once.... and that was in a parking spot.  I knew as soon as I pulled into the spot, that i was going to have problems getting back out of it. 

It's just all planing and taking your time.  I used an old waterbed matress as weight, just filled it partially.  Great even weight, and when the water froze didn't have any sloshing.  If you wanted to take it out, just let it sit in the sun for awhile.  Warmed up quicker than anything.

I would look at some Kumho Road Venture MT KL71s and see if they have your size.  Every review i have read about them has been nothing but praise.  I just got some Toyo Open Country MTs for my F-250 and see how they do.  Before that I had Interco's STS All Terrains.  They did alright, but wasn't impressed.  When it rained it was fun though

This site actually has some very good info and reviews.  Most of the reviews has some very good info, though some can seem like they were written by 1st graders. "Deaz some good tires" was one review...

danny here Petersens 4 wheeloffroad had some tire tests in MAY 07 issues. Tires were Hercules trail digger MT,Micky T BAJA MTZ,Pitbull Maddog,Hankook Dynapro MT RT 03,Dick Cepek Mud Country,Procomp Xtreme MT.T he procomps seem to be a good all around tire a tick on the hard side. The hercules trail digger worked well off road and not bad on road. You can make you all own choices just the procomps and hercules seemed to stand out to me.
