Here is a delirious dynamic diatribe! Now I realize that most of y’all folks know this stuff but this is for the few that don’t
… Most off road wheel spin is due to opposite corner wheels with less weight on them (double off camber) causing a loss of traction. Open differentials put the power to the wheel with the least amount of traction. One way to gain traction in the rear is to have dual rear hand brakes. This will allow you to lightly apply the brake on the wheel that is spinning and the open differential will switch the power to the wheel with the traction. This is not a good idea if you have rear disc brakes similar the some of the GM types. The rear e-brakes on some are VERY weak and can’t take the load. Some farm tractors have dual brakes peddles I.e. one for right and one for left drive wheels – this can aid in turning and/or traction.
... LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and Vari-Loc are systems using spring clutch packs to transfer some of the power to the wheel with the most traction. Clutch packs can wear out fast with heavy use.
… Detroit Lockers, ARB air lockers, electric activated lockers, and welded differentials (Lincoln Lockers) are the real deal for traction but unforgiving for sideways slip on slick surfaces.
… Electronic systems connected to ABS and Vari-Loc oil pump systems require wheel spin to activate the anti-slip action. Lockers and LSD’s work full time for the most part.
Have a good one and see you later!... Don S..
Vote for the ‘Woman’ or Obama and be sure to register all your weapons of self defense so the government (and later the U.N.) will be able to quickly come and confiscate them!
