The Frontier is a great truck, other than the engine which is a bag of nails.
I have driven 6 and they are all the same, when made to work and under load it sounds as if the crank is running a bearing. Nissan tell me that it is the power valve, yeh right and I came down with the last drop of rain.
When starting engine from cold it rattles for .5 second until oil pressure takes up slack, I think its a lazy oil pump and the crank is ratteling. Nissan tell me its piston slap that stops when the oil gets in the cylinders.
What do you think?

I've got a old Maxima that does the same thing when it starts cold. It's actually a stock timing issue and oil. When it was really cold out (10s or lower), the engine would do it for around 2 minutes or so.
The engine uses hyd lifters, and when there's no oil in the upper head, the cam slaps against them, giving you harsh sound.
As for when under power, I couldn't tell you, as the VG30E, and VG33E sound a little bit different, plus mine isn't stock so I wouldn't be able to hear anyway.

Even though the 4.0 is a VQ engine, it has quite a different feel than the 3.5 in my Altima. You can tell it's got a longer stroke, as noise/vibration/harshness make their presense known under hard accereration, where you barely feel anything with the 3.5. I don't think its anything to worry about, but it does indicate that not as much effort went into silencing this bigger displacement VQ. I too have the 'morning rattle' from the lifters, and I've been told not to worry about it...but it's hard not to cringe every morning at startup. It makes me want to install an auxiliary oil pump to kick on every morning before startup. My 3.5 never made a sound other than the sounds it was supposed to make. I guess Nissan (like some on this forum) figured the public would be accepting of less refinement in a truck engine.

Nissan seems to think everyone will accept less now. They've been going downhill ever since 05. Everything they've changed has ended up being worse off.

I don't know about that....from statements I see online, the 4.0 is a helluva improvement over the 3.3 in power, reliability and maintenance.

That's kind of funny since the VG series motor was the motor used for NISMO's engines even after the VQ was introduced.
It's something that we'll have to wait and see. It took a couple years till the 2.5L started showing problems.
Honestly though, Nissan should shoot their designer. I'm not a big fan of the mini Titan.

The 4.0 hadn't been developed in time to make it the V6 option for the 1st gen Frontier, and they had no intention of putting the 3.5 in it. The 4.0 would have been put into the 1st gen midway through its model, which causes all sorts of problems with parts and service, as well as the engineering differences that would have been required to adapt the truck to the 4.0. Therefore, they waited to put the new engine into the new truck. It has nothing to do with their seeing the 3.3 as superior to the 4.0, Nismo or no Nismo.

that's nice, though it's amazing they still didn't install the 4.0 till the 3rd Gen Frontier. Nissan is just narrowing it's engine field. The VG and KA motors are now no longer on their line up.

I kinda like that harshness in the hard accelerations. I bought a truck. I want to drive a truck. I want it to handle like a truck and sound like a truck and feel like a truck. If it was just as smooth as the altima, i'd be unhappy. If I wanted a car with a bed, I would have bought a honda.
