I have a 2006 Frontier SE KC 4X4, i've had it about 3 months.  Lately when I try to shift it into 4Hi is hesitates and sometimes doesn't go, the 4WD light will come on and it will not go away until I turn the truck off for a while.  When it does shift into 4hi of lo and I shift to back to 2Hi the indicator on the dash that shows the drive line of the truck flashes for a long time.  It use to shift very fast.  Mine is the knob that you turn to select 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo

This is why I hate having eletronic 4x4,  I prefer the manual lever.  Sounds like your electric motor in the transfer case is going out, or the clutch mechanism is going.  Either way, it's not going to be cheap to fix

I have the same problem. The thing i figured out is that the "shift on the fly" isn't quite that simple. I never have trouble from 2 to 4hi. going back to 2 it blinks for varying times. I figured out it needs to be engaged (foot off the clutch) but have no load on it (coasting) works flawlessly for me if I do it that way. Give it a try. My truck is about a month and a half old, same truck.

I took it in to Nissan and they ran diagnistics on it and said it was fine.  They drove it around and said that when you are switching from 4hi to 2 hi if you stop and put the vehicle in reverse then back into drive the indicator on the dash will stop flashing.  So far it has worked fine.  They also told me about another recall for the door locks, I would call and check to see if your truck is included.

Does anyone know exactly what engages/disengages on the 05-06 when you shift into/out of 4x4? I know the transfer case shifts, but do the front wheels unlock or are my front wheels dragging around a spare drive shaft all the time?

your half shafts won't be engaged if you are not in 4x4... otherwise you would be in 4x4.

it will spin freely however with your wheels

Yep.. the front hubs have a locking mechanism.  When you engage the 4x4... it automatically engages the front hubs, locking the wheels to the half shafts, which connects the transfer case power to the wheels.

When you shift out of 4x4... the hubs release allowing the wheels to spin freely from the half shafts.
