My 07 4.0 Frontier has this electrical whine. It's loud enough that I have to turn the truck off at a drive through. Not sure why, but charcoal canister solenoid comes to mind.It starts as you hit the gas. It does not follow the RPM but as you throttle up, the pitch ramps down just a little. I know it's an electrical thing because I can very quickly swith the ignition off and right back on. The truck keeps running but the noise will stop. It starts again if I feather the gas from idle, or whether I drive the truck. Seems to have no effect on performance, but it's quite annoying. 147k miles. Thanks!!

The first thing that comes to my attention would be the
secondary timing chain tensioner shoes, but you say it goes
away cycling the ignition. Try listening to different
components w/ a stethoscope to identify the culprit.

Actually, you helped me diagnose the tensioner last year and it has
since been repaired. Thanks, frontierguy! lol
I have noticed a small oil leak since my last oil change and have been
checking my oil level on occasion. I took it to have the oil changed
today after posting this and haven't heard the noise since. It must
have something to do with slightly low oil levels. Kinda sounded like a
pump running dry now that I think about it.
Hope this helps going forward! And again thanks for your input.

Just had a brain fart, I believe the noise you are
referring to has to do with the PCV valve and baffles in
the valve cover becoming plugged. The noise doesn't occur
until the engine has been run for awhile, correct?

We've seen it on a few vehicles in the shop. I have a hard
time hearing it, deaf in one ear and can't hear with the
other!! Try replacing the PCV valve. If that doesn't do it,
you will have to clean or replace the valve covers.
Something about the baffles getting plugged and restricted
causing a high pitched air type noise.
