I stopped by my dealer as I heard the whine from the timing chain. The service advisor wrote in "customer hears secondary timing chain upon acceleration".
He then asked me to have a seat in the waiting room, it may be up to an hour. 3 minutes later, he calls me back and says "yep, the whine is there let's shedule a chain replacement."
It will be done next week, and I will keep you posted!
Truck just turned 41K.
I have never taken it over 3000RPM.
Thanks.

The secondary timing chain tensioner shoes will wear
through the plastic resulting in metal to metal
contact(plunger piston and secondary chain). I just turned
42K on mine, no whine yet, I've been over 3K RPM's many
times!!! Must be the Amsoil doing a great job! Watch,
tomorrow they will start to whine!!!

Is it possible that my whine happened before yours (if it does) because I have a heavier Frontier? (LWB)
Think the trucks that pull trailers and trucks that carry loads on a normal basis would have the chain wear out sooner?
Thanks.

Some how I think my engine has worked a lot harder than
yours if you have never been over 3K. I love to beat guys
away from a stop lite or get up to speed quickly on an
entrance ramp. (57 going on 16!!! my wife hates it when I
drive her 3.5 Altima).

I got to 87k before mine started whining. Truck spends a lot of time on the highway, does tow a 22ft. bay boat and lives on Castrol Syntec.

As the owner of a 2011 4L CC, all of this secondary timing chain
replacement talk has me a little depressed.
I beg to ask the question: What the Hell good does a timing chain do if
it ends up being replaced jut like a timing belt ? Silly me, I was under
the impression that a timing chain would never need replacement if the
engine were maintained properly and not abused !
I know this thread refers to a 2008 Frontier, is it possible that Nissan
woke up and decided to redesign a timing chain that actually could go
the life if the engine instead of being semi-disposable ?
Stated differently, are the secondary timing chain tensioners improved
on the 2011 4L vs the 2008?
I'm a little bummed on this issue, any responses from more
experienced Frontier owners would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's not the chains themselves, it's the tensioner pad
that
wears out. But once the chain starts having metal to
metal contact you don't want to leave it in there and
just replace the pad.
I'd say it was a part engineering that was
meant to save money and keep the truck price down.
I'd like to get my hands on one and see how similar it is
to the old KA24 tension pad. Those never seemed to go
out.
The thing I'm waiting to see is if the Frontier starts
having frozen u-joint problems like the Xterras do.

kcidmil, thanks for the prompt reply.
I get the idea on the tensioner pad, I am curious as to the parts & labor
cost of replacing the tensioner pad. Is it fairly easy to get to, or is this
one of those half a day jobs ?
I don't have the issue, I just think it is a silly issue to have ! Sounds like
this one was avoidable !

Fellow Xterra member just did his today, said it would have
taken him only 2-3 hours if he hadn't had to keep going
back to the parts store to get the right belt and puller
for the harmonic balancer.

Damn good to know. I have over 100k and NO problems whatsoever with my Frontier. After breaking the truck in, I have been using Mobile 1 Fully Synthetic ever since. I have gone to 5000 rpm many times (because some old people drive slow) getting around people on the road.
