I owned a 2008 Nissan Frontier 4.0 V-6 with 28,000 on the
clock when i took it back to nissan to repair the cam
chain rattle under the bumper to bumper warranty.Nissan
refused the repair stating all the frontiers have this
rattle, this is normal. The plastic tensioner wears out
in under 30k miles causing the cam chain rattle. The cam
chain noise sounded like the rods were knocking for about
5 miles. Then the noise would stop. This rattle really
bugged me. I couldn't sell it to a friend, without
telling them about it. I drove down to the nissan dealer
and told the service rep. that i had fixed my cam chain
rattle for good! He said how did you do it. I said look
thru the window and see the Honda Ridgeline sitting
there, it has NO timing chain noise !
That is how you cure the rattle! Adios !!

The cam chain rattle is very common on this engine as it
is
with many timing chain engines. My "08 has done it since
day one only for about 3-5 secs. at start up. It sounds
like you had other issues that weren't addressed properly
by the dealer. If and when the tensioner shoe does wear
thru, you
will experience a high pitched whine sound that will
increase w/ RPM's due to the tensioner metal plunger
contacting the secondary timing chain. That is covered
under the 5/60 power train warranty. Do you think the TB
on
the Ridgeline is a non-maintenance item?
