I have alomost the same problem with my 2002 frontier crew cab. My code says evap control ststem small leak detected.  I took it to the dealer and they said the gas tank is rusted on top.  I have been noticing a faint gas smell once in a while.  Working on getting a new tank soon.

mqvc8,
might want to check again with the dealer, there is a
recall (R0402 - R0401 depending on which state you live
in), that covers the sending unit and tank if needed.

gas tank was rusted on top, and the rust was going in the tank.  I did't go to the dealer to get it fixed, think I can still get credit for the recall?
