I saw a post that is similar but for an 00 model year so want to check if different for 98 4cylinder 4x4. It will run fine and start stuttering like out of gas or like water in gas after a few miles, sometimes runs better if i let it sit, but happens almost in exact spot on my commute. I do not have a scanner(?) to check code so any advice would be great. Sorry new to forum, so its a 98 4 cylinder 4x4 with about 125k.
Thanks

If ur check engine light is on, you can go to autozone and
they can usually hook it up to a scan tool and check what
codes are in the system. Look up the codes and see what to
fix. If you really suspect its water in the fuel, get some
IsoHeet and put it in the tank.

Need to scan it for codes. Possible dirt/moisture in dist cap(TSB for new style distributor), possible dirty MAFS(using a genuine Nissan oil impregnated air filter)??????????

the oil that is on certain air filters (such as K&N) can
damage the MAF sensor and make the engine run horrible.

I put a cold air intake on my 04, (which has the same 2.4
motor as you do) everything was fine until I cleaned and
re-oiled the air filter. I put WAAYYY too much oil on the
filter. The truck ran HORRIBLE! So what I did was I got a
new air filter that came pre-oiled and I cleaned out all
the ductwork for the intake and I removed the MAF sensor
and cleaned it with some fuel injector cleaner that is
meant for sensors and stuff. After I put everything back
together, it ran pretty decent.

To get to the MAF sensor, you will have to remove the air
filter housing over the throttle body. There will be a
little black box with 4 screws some wires connected to
it. Disconnect the wires, and un screw it. GENTLY, and
EVER SO CAREFULLY remove the MAF sensor. Spray it down
with the injector cleaner that its safe for sensors and
let it dry for a few minutes then put everything back
together. Try using a cheap (Fram) dry air filter for a
few days to see if that was the problem.

If you do have a cold air intake like I do, you will have
to work out some vacuum leak problems to get it running
perfectly...but thats another story

I tried cleaning the MAF sensor and it runs very strong now when it runs well and changed the air filter to a fram, but did not cure  the problem. Went to the Oreilly's near me to check on getting the codes checked but they informed me in california its not legal for them to pull the codes for me? Even if they are wrong is there anyway to get codes w/o buying a scan tool(?) or do i have to, and if i do i have to buy one what do i look for or what is reccomended(or what not to get).
thanks again for all help

i did forget to mention that this problem started after running out of fuel one day (due to the dash not always working and gas guage never correct) and this is why i thought dirt or water in tank. i did change fuel filter. the service engine soon light came on when this problem 1st started and has not cleared since.... whew ,thanks guys

that's weird that they can't even tell you what the codes
are...I know around here they can read them but they can't
erase them or something. There may be some water in the fuel
tank, try putting some isoHEET. I it removes water from the
fuel tank. I think it just mixes with the water and makes
it burn...idk I'm not a chemist.

Thats if isoHEET is legal in Cali. You may have to be 18 or
21 to buy it there if it is legal.

Well i bought a scan tool and it gave me p0100 which according to my book is MAF sensor. I already cleaned this andreplaced the air filter with a dry type. I cleared the code and started up truck again and the sevice engine soon light came back on. So hooked up scan tool and it said no code buy had an yellow light indicating all tests were not complete and the scan tool book said to run thru a OBD2 drive cycle. What is this and how do i perform?
Thanks

from what i've read a "drive cycle" means you have to drive the truck. From what I can tell you are supposed to drive it at certian speeds for certian distances. I couldn't find anything on the frontier. Pray to google and you might have better luck on finding the specific directions. Otherwise just drive the truck as normal for a few weeks. Sometimes what happens after a few miles or on/off cycles the light will go off and the code will be cleared.

I had a "Cylinder mis-fire" code that turned the light on. I fixed the root cause of the problem, and the light went off in about a week. It probably took that long for me to complete the "drive cycle" so the computer could "learn" that there were no longer any problems.
