I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier Desert Runner which has a locking tailgate. For some reason the tailgate won't open anymore. The tailgate handle is pulls up all the way easily but the tailgate doesn't budge when I try to open it. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Most likely it will need a new assy., unless you find something bent or disconnected.

Not sure if you can use a credit card to shimmy the latches on the end of the tailgate?

I pulled the 2 bolts out of the back of the tailgate and just use my hand to open it up.. seems like the assembly is pretty cheaply made.

I figure, this gives me an excuse to get a new tailgate (mine is a little beat up)

But otherwise, yes, the assembly can be replaced, you just need small hands

I had the plastic handle break off of that slab type locking tailgate. Instead of buying a whole new assembly you can just buy the hardbody tailgate latch from 90's models and switch out the handle..... they fit Big smile

. All you have to do if hacksaw the pins on the new one and switch it out.
