Head gasket leak on my 2003 Frontier V6 Crew Cab 4 X 4.  I have had minor issues with this truck since buying new.  First issue was power windows failing intermittently (under 10000 miles).  Took an act of congress for NissanNorthAmerica to authorize motor replacement.  Next at about 25000 miles I applied the emergency brake and could not get it to release.  Had it towed and Nissan did not want to pay for repair of this safety device until I wrote a letter outlining my disappointment.  Now at 83000 miles I have a leaking head gasket with the antifreeze falling on exhaust and gagging me.  Nissan will not help at all.  I am a little disappointed with them even though the truck handles well and is comfortable.  Anyone else experience such things?

Basic warranty is 3yrs/36K miles. Power train 5yrs/60K miles. Whichever comes first. Are you sure it is the head gasket and not the wax pellet assy for the fast idle control or just the intake gasket. I have seen head gaskets fail, but be sure to rule out the others first. At 83K I don't see where you have any room to complain other than the fact that we would all like our vehicles to run forever w/ no failures!!!

Thanks for the response. This is one thing that irked me with
NissanNorthAmerica's response to me. I had the truck pressure tested at
my local mechanic (whom I trust) and he discovered the leak shortly after
I started smelling antifreeze. I called the regional rep who told me I
needed to have the problem verified by an authorized dealer service. My
mechanic charged me $37 for the pressure test and the dealer charged
me $124. That is the reason I and almost everyone else only use dealer
services for warranty work. One of the reasons they said they would offer
no assistance is because I dont have the vehicle serviced at Nissan
dealerships, brand loyalty he called it. This is my second Nissan, that is
brand loyalty. Spending 1/3 dealer prices for service is common sense.
Certainly we expect vehicle failures, they are machines, but it seems to
me and almost everyone I have talked to about this (plenty, by the way) is
that this is uncharacteristic of head gasket leaks, a problem you might
anticipate on a vehicle with twice the miles. My goal with the post is to
find out if others have experienced the same problem which would
indicate a defect of some type. If it is unique to my truck and my luck,
wouldn't the company want to throw me a bone (i.e. $300 credit at a
dealer service who would charge me a premium to secure my loyalty) to
make sure I don't send everyone on my email list a description of my
disappointment? Admittedly, I knew the warranty limits when I bought
the truck, but now I think I know why Nissan warranty has some of the
lowest limits in the industry. Anyway, that's my rant.

It baffles me how a dealer can charge $124 for a pressure test, how long did they spend on it?? It was obviously leaking already which leaves a tell-tale trail of coolant residue, not to mention any technician that is worth anything should know where to look for coolant leaks on that engine w/o even pressure testing! As far as what dealers charge per hour(our rate is $70/hr -cheap), have you ever looked at the special tools and testing equipment that is sent to each dealership from the factory? You have no choice, you have to pay for it, and if they do an audit of the special tools, they will automatically send replacements for missing tools along with a penalty fee! End of my rant. Believe me, I feel your pain. Maybe some more calls to Nissan would help.

Thanks for the sympathy Frontierguy.   They had the truck for half a day, I have no idea how much time they spent on it, but they told me it would be $104 before they did anything (they neglected to mention the hazardous waste disposal fee of $20).  I only did that because Nissan told me they would not consider any consideration of my complaint without confirmation.  All I know is the dealer simply confirmed the diagnosis of my regular mechanic.   From my standpoint, Nissan sucked another $124 from me that I didnt need to spend.

I really do understand that a dealer will need to charge more and the techs are specialists but by the same token it is understandable that most people would go elsewhere if they trust thier mechanic and the repair doesn't require special knowledge or tools.  The regional rep told me he was the final word on the decision and that there was no one to appeal to.  I asked him if I could contact the person that does his performance review but he failed to see the humor in that.  I guess I will bite the bullet and pay the $1200 or so to replace the head gasket, but I am afraid I will shop other brands before replacing "Rocky" with another Nissan when it is time.  Again, I thought they could have thrown me a bone, especially considering how much scrutiny Japanese technology is getting these days with the Toyota mess.
