I have a 05 frontier with the 4.0 V6 and about four months ago I had to replace one of the converters under warrenty. The resonator behind that converter also needed to be replaced but since it wasnt covered under warrenty, I just cut both off. Around three months ago, I changed the oil and used mobile 1 full synthetic which ive used since the truck had 6k miles. I normally change the oil about every 5k miles and it hasnt used a drop before. Lately, Ive noticed that the the tail pipe has become dark black and theres signs of soot on the bumper. On the way back from a trip this past weekend, I noticed my oil gauge started fluctuating back and forth. Thinking it was the gauge, I drove on another ten or so miles until I had to stop. At idle, the gauge would drop down and the oil light would come on. I pulled over to check the oil and found it to be very dirty and not touching the stick. It took three qts to fill it up and make it to the dealer. The next day they checked it again and said it was about 3/4 qt low. After a scan and inspection for leaks, they cant give me a definite answer. Could the lack of resonators and reduced backpressure cause it to burn this much oil in only 3k miles? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've heard of concerns with the baffles in the valve covers becoming plugged and causing the the oil to be sucked into the engine at alarming rates. Have not seen it myself yet. That may be the reason for the cat failure due to oil contamination. Did the cat come apart and plug the resonator? If so,I would give Nissan a call and ask them why it wasn't covered!

Actually didnt notice any oil use before the cat failure. The dealer claimed that running lower quality gas can cause them to burn out. When the converter failed, it clogged the resonator. All the dealer would cover was the converter and there was still significant power loss after it was replaced. Everything seemed fine, except for the slightly louder exhaust tone, after the resonators were cut off. Around 3k miles later, was when it became 3+ qts low. The dealer cant tell me if there was any engine damage caused by the clogged converter or the lack of resonators. All I know to try is replacing the resonators and see if it helps.

I would call Nissan, if the cats failed, which plugged up the resonator, it should be covered also. Not to mention,if the cat came apart, it is very possible catalyst material was drawn into the engine due to overlap, which causes scoring of the cylinders and premature ring wear. Don't let them jerk you around.

The resonator failed bacause of the cat going out, I could actually see dents in the screen where pieces hit after it was cut off. I called Nissan last week and they opend a file and will be talking with the local dealer about the issue. I just hope there isnt an issue with the resonators being cut off if it does need an engine. I checked the compression last week on the drivers side. The front two were about 160lbs but the back was close to 20lbs lower, dont know if this is an issue or normal. When looking under the plastic cover, I found two broke wires going to some sort of vaccum canister. There were a few lines going to it and I think it also connected to the intake. I taped them up the best I could and did have current back to the connector. Dont really know what this is or if it could be part of my prob. I changed the oil today, it was dark and smelled burnt even after adding the 3+ qts when it was low. Just went back with a conventional oil since I want to see if it is still using it. When I started it, there was a little soot that came from the exhaust and it was still smoking also. Took it down the road and noticed a little more smoke while getting up to speed. I dont have a clue what to do next but put the resonators back on if Nissan doesnt talk like they will help me with the repair. Not really looking forward to spending close to $300 to get them back on and it not fix the problem.
