Hi Everyone

I have the broken bearing in the steering column issue that I know may of you have experienced.  (the steering wheel is very loose, it rocks up, down, left & right)

Is there any new info out there that anyone would be willing to share.  Please post if you had this issue previously, I just wanted to see how common this is.  Sealership is telling me they never heard of this... I call BS.

Has anyone gotten anywhere with Nissan Of America.  I'm now 4 months out of warranty and the vehicle fails state inspection until its fixed.

22,000 miles

Thanks

Have seen it only 2-3 times. You may want to mention "GOODWILL" policy to your dealer. It always helps if you are a regular customer to a particular dealership, but I know a lot of guys like to "tinker"on there own vehicles.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">
founnd this:

Classification: ST07-002A

Reference: NTB07-014A

Date: September 4, 2007

2005-2008 FRONTIER, XTERRA, PATHFINDER; STEERING COLUMN SERVICE PART

APPLIED VEHICLES
2005 - 2008 Frontier (D40)
2005 - 2008 Xterra (N50)
2005 - 2008 Pathfinder (R51)

IF YOU CONFIRM

There is a need to replace the steering column upper section for any reason.

ACTION

^ Do not replace the entire upper and lower steering column assembly.

^ The upper steering column assembly is now available as a separate service part. See Figure 1, above.
^ Refer to section PS of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for steering column removal and installation procedures.

That didn't work like I wanted it to. Can't seem to copy/paste from All Data- must be some copyright law or something?????

I believe it does have a Copy Guard system - - lakota

Frontierguy,

Thanks - It looks like that might be some valuable information for my situation, any chance you could summarize what was on that All Data page?

From your info it looks like this also may happen on the Pathfinder and Xterra, does it give you a description of the problem, and do you have any info on the upper column assembly which it says is now avaiable?  Any part #'s  ?

I think the dealership is replacing the entire column, (not positive) they told me there is a service bulletin reguarding this which instructs them to replace another part lower down on the column....  parts quoted at  $750.00

Am I crazy to think that anything except a maufacture defect is to blame...

Thanks again for the info, much appreciated !

It is the upper part of the column.
Frontier w/o tilt 48811-EA000
Frontier-Path-Xterra w/tilt 48811-EA260
It is a bearing failure, most likely a manufacture defect, job went to the lowest bidder most likely!!!
I would call 1-800 nissan and complain.

I too am experiencing up/down and sideways movement in my steering wheel.  I have a 06 Frontier SE 4x4 with tilt wheel.  Dealer denies any problems like this. They quoted a price of $1050.00 to replace upper column.  I'm confident it is a bad bearing(s) that was manufactured by the lowest bidder.  My next step is to contact Nissan AND The National Highway Traffic Safety Council.
