I have a 1998 frontier 4cylinder. I replaced the
alternator belt and when done, started the motor up and now
have a loud clicking noise when idles and the intensity
picks up as the engine accelerates. Looked evrywhere for
possibilies...checked all the pullies and water pump. All
are good. Replaced the fan clutch but that didn't take
care of the noise. Any suggestions?

first off before you changed the belt on your truck did it make this noise? You said you check the pulleys was there slop on the alternator pulley also check and see if the alternator pulley spins free. You could maybe have the bearing that started to go bad in the alternator and did not here till you put a fresh belt on it. Are you sure the belt might not be to tight cauing it wear more on the alternator How many miles do you have on your truck.

Dannyg....I really appreciate your responce! The noise was not present
before I changed the belt and I checked the alternator pully before I put
the new belt on and it spun freely. So I thought that maybe it was the
water pump. So I took the belt off the alternator(the same belt runs the
water pump and the fan) and started the engine and the noise was still
there. Did I mention the noise increases in intensity as the rpms
increase. The truck has 170,000 miles on it. I'm stumped so any help
would be great...thanks!

If the clicking noise is as you described, it could be A) Something external to the block like something you jarred loose on a rotating item that is hitting something or a bad belt tensioner or; B)something internal to the engine like a valve trian component or and injector that decided to act up.  SInce it did not do it before A is more likely than B.  When the belt is off , I assume that the water pump, alternator and fan as well as the air conditioning compressor (if you have one) were NOT turning.  If this is the case, then the main drive pulley on the crank must be the culprit.  See if this is loose or if there is something on this pulley that is sticking out and hitting something.  Run the engine without the belt (when cold) with the hood up and listen.  Carfully use a mechanics stethescope if you have one to see if it helps locate the noise.  It will quickly tell you if the noise is internal to the engine, for example.

Also, does the ticking correspond with the engine RPM on a 1:1 basis or is it slower?  If it is 1 noise to 2 engine revs, it would indicate a valve train noise.

When you changed the belts, did you happen to rotate the engine backwards by any chance? Sounds like a timing chain/guide issue as previously mentioned, especially w/ the miles on it. Have also seen the rocker shaft bolts back out on these engines causing a rattle type noise.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">
