Can someone please help me. I have a 2000 nissan frontier with the 2.4 engine. It has 150K miles. The other day I was driving it and the oil light illuminated, after about two miles I started hearing a rattleing noise coming from the engine. Sounded like the valves. I stopped the engine and trailered it home. I figured the oil pump had went out so I changed it. Didn't fix, when engine is first started it runs great, but when it warms up the oil light comes on and the rattle noise comes back. All the mechanics that I have contacted seem to be scared to even look at it, the first thing they want to do is throw an engine at it. It seems to me that it has to be something simple. Maybe the pick-up?

Is there a chance you can take out the oil pressure sending unit and hook up a gauge screw in kind?
This will give you better reading to see if the oil pressure is actually low.
I imagine the oil is not low, correct?
What weight oil are you using?

Dirty pickup screen perhaps. If you are getting noise when the light is on, chances are you do have low oil pressure and could score bearings, etc. It is possible you spun a bearing or had some other lower end failure. If this persists, you will need to tear down the engine and find it.

I have seen the timing chain guides on these engines get ground up into fine pieces(plastic) and like already mentioned, maybe they have restricted the oil pick up screen.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

Ok so I dropped the pan and found it completely full of sludge and the screen completely clogged. Cleaned the screen and pan, reassembled, and now truck runs like new. I had put the truck on blocks in my shop for over two years and I guess the oil seperated and the heavy sludge would not drain out of the plug during oil change. Thanks to everyone for their help...

Good news is always welcome. Glad you got the problem solved. Now, to clean out the engine, add about 15-20% Marvel Mystery Oil to your crankcase (drain out a quart of oil first) and run for 1500 miles. Drain the oil and put on a new filter. Then run Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 5w-30 for about 400 miles. Drain and change the filter again. Refill with Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 and gor for 5-7000 miles. Should be good to go!
