i have a 2001 nissan frontier 2.4l 4 cyl 2wd 5 speed. no service engine soon light. When i start the truck it will idle fine at around 1800+/- rpms (its about 35*-40* outside) it idles like this for about ten seconds then it starts idling slower and slower till it dies. i can restart it and it does the same thing again. what could cause this?

if i give it a little gas while its starting to die it will hesitate then the rpms will shoot up a little then it will just continue to dies down.. could it possibly be the fuel filter? any other causes? dont have alot of money to dump into it unnecessarily. thanks alot!

Fuel filter would high on my list.  Does this model have an electric fuel pump? Could be a weak pump as well.

I date myself by remebering mechanical pumps.  I guess those phased out before your memory.

no i know they exist but i didnt think they had come on a car since the 80's, i thought that once they switched to efi that the mechanical pumps didnt make enough pressure... the truck has 88000 miles on it, i did a once over on the vacuum lines but didnt see any that were off, torn or anything.. there doesnt seem to be to many vacuum lines on this, wouldnt i be able to hear the vacuum leak? this thing only will stay running for about 10-15 seconds total,

Are you using a GENUINE NISSAN air filter??? Could be a dirty MAFS. Possible EGR valve stuck open? < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">
