My 05 Frontier's clutch went south at 43k miles. This truck has been used about 30 times to haul loads of less then 1000 pounds for about a total of 1000 miles.
The clutch was operating normally until one day when I was pressing in the clutch to start the truck there was a loud pop. After that, the pedal play was soft and the clutch started slipping.
When taken apart, about half of the fingers on the pressure plate were bent. I'm guessing this was the popping sound.
I'm arguing that this should be covered under warranty -- my thinking is that the pressure plate failed.
Has anyone ever seen this part fail like this before?
Thanks.

Look in your owners warranty manual-the clutch cover(pressure plate) is covered for 5yrs/60,000 miles. Have seen them fail on other Nissans through the years.

Will do, thanks.
So far, the dealer said it was not a warrantied repair and referred me to Nissan consumer affairs. Nissan consumer affairs also states that it is not a warrantied repair, because the clutch is not part of the drivetrain.
But if the clutch cover is explicitly specified in the manaul to be part of the drivetrain, that should be my hook. My warranty book is in the frontier, which is at the dealer -- so unless I can find it online tonight, I'll drive over there and check it out tomorrow.
Why would the fingers on a clutch cover bend like that? Metal fatigue? Just Plain Ol' Defective?
thanks.
____ On a separate note, Carousel Nissan of Iowa City, IA has been shady and unhelpful in all this. First of all, most recently, when I said that I might pull the car out of their repair shop if it was not under warranty, the service manager said they would charge me restocking on all the parts. So I called their parts department, and they said they would never do that -- that they had no idea what the service manager was talking about. The service manager also said he'd go to bat for me (in his words), but all he did was give me the consumer affairs phone number. And now, it sound like they didn't even argue in my behalf that the clutch cover should be replaced under warranty. Bastards.

Yes. Most likely metal fatigue. When you are at a stop, do you put the trans in neutral and let the clutch out or do you sit there in gear with the clutch depressed??

Did a search @ www.nissanextendedwarranty.com - you can download the warranty manual for an 07 Frontier. It states that the clutch cover is covered. I just replaced a clutch assy at work on an 09 Frontier-it was wore out from being slipped - no finger problems on the cover-covered it under warranty.

Thanks fontierguy ....

Hmm, I'd normally drop it into Neutral, unless I know it's only going to be a couple of seconds ... I'd guess that's the right thing to do ??? Christ, it only has 43k miles on it, so i'd really hope the part could last that long in general.
I actually found the warranty online: http://www.nissanusa.com/pdf/warranty/2005_Wrnty.pdf
On page 4: TRANSMISSION AND TRANSAXLE Case and all internal parts, torque converter and converter housing, automatic transmission control module, transfer case and all internal parts, seals and gaskets, clutch cover and housing, and electronic transmission controls.
So, it looks like I'm back to the dealer. I wonder why they are unwilling to just cover it under warranty?
Thanks.

Because they can make more money customer pay as opposed to warranty.

When I bought my 2007 fronty, I considered a manual and sat in one at a car show. I was appalled by the extremley light foot pressure required to push the clutch to the floor. Iasked the sales rep about it and he said that this had been done to allow more people to drive a stick comfortably. I asked him about projected life of the clutch system and at that point he hemmed and hawed. Bought an auto tranny instead. I figured with the low clamping force of the clutch plate to the pressure plate, there would be big issues.

Well, finally Nissan is going to do the repair under warranty.
I had to go through 2 levels of management at corporate before I got to someone who actually talked to the dealership. In addition, I threatened (and was willing) to haul the disassembled truck out of the dealer's repair bay -- maybe they were motivated to state a case for me to Nissan when they realized they were not going to get anything more out of me.
In any case, should be able to pick it up tomorrow, everything done free of charge.
Thanks for the help
