HI, I am having a couple issues with my truck, hoping someone know's what it will take to repair.it's a 2001 v6,5spd,crew cab,4x4,94k mileage.i bought the ruck with 65k 2yrs ago, since purchase anytime after traveling at hi-way speeds i was able to smell what i can best describe as "hot",like something was getting excessively hot, could smell around back half of truck.never seen any leaks.tire pressure ok.now i know this is bad,but i never have checked the tranfers case/transmission/or differentials. Now for the most recent issue which may or may not be related.i was towing a trailer, with 2 dirtbikes and gear.probably at tow limit, not sure.i drive 150 miles roughly, stop for gas and smell/see gear oil all over underside/wheels/etc.i get very nervous...so i crawl underneath to verify-yes gear oil.it looks to be coming from top of transmission.what kind of seals/vents are up top,and i am hoping i don't have to remove trans.oh and i went right to a shop, they checked fluid-it poured out,so was overfull all this time.which i am sure caused leak-maybe.any ideas on repair?i plan on degreasing/powerwashing  so i can find what's leaking.thansk for any help/ideas

Danny heere I`ve not messed with with any Nissan trannys before. Clean it like you say you are going to. I have messed with a few 3speeds and 4speeds in the past. Is there any traces of gear lube in around the gear shift were it pops out of the floorboard. Have you felt any slop in the shifter

..

Here are a few heads up for beginners that may be reading this thread:

... If you’re going to be hauling loads and trailers drain and refill all drive line cases to the proper level with synthetic fluids. Lube oil in the cases expands as it gets hot because friction in the gears creates a lot of heat… heavy loads cause much more heat.

... The oil in the cases spinning in the case is the only coolant that cools the hot gears in the case! Over filled lube levels can blow seals even if the case is vented. Modified exhaust systems can add heat to the drive line!

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

It’s a good thing I have already learned everything! At my age my learning curve has degraded to a straight line… <snif> <snif> …

yes,it was a lazy move not checking the fluids after i bought truck.going to change all drive fluids, hopefully the excessive trans fluid was causing the 'hot' smell.hoping it was just the trans venting when it got hot and fluid expanded.i will post what i find after cleaning and insp.
