I just recently purchased a used 2004 Nissan Frontier Dessert Runner.  Yesterday, while I was driving home the service engine soon light came on.  I have read online and hear where people have suggested that it may be the gas cap or disconnecting the battery.  I have tried both and the light still remains on.  Should I take it to AutoZone to do a free diagnostic or should I take it to the local Nissan dealership?  Thank you for your help.

Try AZ, it's free. Just don't let them tell you what to replace. You definitely do not want an aftermarket gas cap, etc.

Ok, just got back from AZ and the code is P0430.  They said it could be:

1.  Catalytic Converter

2.  Engine misfire or running condition

3.  Large Vacuum Leak

4.  Engine Oil leakage into exhaust valve guide seals, piston rings

It's a lot easier to reply to a question if all the info is given on a particular vehicle. It's easy to put the info in your signature!!!!
Assuming it is a V-6, P0430 is the code for the left side 3 way cat., covered for 8 yrs./80,000 miles. See your dealer.

..

dcary;

What the good Nissan Technician  is trying to tell you is... We don't want to have to guess what model of Nissan Frontier you are having a problem with!

This would include Engine, Super Charger, Transmission, 4x4, and mods.

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle model information to their SIG (signature similar to mine) plus add their City and State . A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer! ... MODERATOR

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Thank you, just took my truck to the Nissan dealership and they have ordered the part, it was the cat.  So they said they will have it in on Wednesday and I will take the truck up there on Friday.  Do you know how long it takes to replace the cat?  Thanks again for your assistance!

the Nissan Dealership replaced the CAT but on Monday the SES light came back on.  I just took it to the dealership this morning and they said the O2 Sensor is bad and will have it on Tuesday.  What does an O2 sensor do?
