Hey guys.
My truck in a 2007 KC SE with the 6SPD and ~ 14k miles. I noticed a noise when accelerating intermittently around 6 or 7k miles. The trucks been to two different shops to try and locate and stop the noise. The best way to describe it is to imagine a kazoo that you are ever so lightly blowing into. It isn't as high pitched but it definitely has that reed vibration sound.
Originally I thought it was coming from the dash. The dash has been ripped down twice and all the wires have been insulated so we can rule this out. I now think that the noise is coming from the engine side of the firewall.
As I said, the noise is intermittent. When you accelerate in certain instances, you can hear it clearly between 2.5k-4k. After this the engine noise from the 4.0 is overbearing. The best way for me to reproduce it is in 3rd or 4th, around 2.5 and put the pedal to the floor.
I tried to take a video of the sound but once I stopped at the next light and got the camera out (less than .5 miles) I couldn't make the noise again. I'm in telecommunication and I understand how hard it is to troubleshoot intermitent problems.
The truck goes in for service Thursday and I'm going to take the tech for a ride with the hopes that I can reproduce the sound. My question to you is have you ever heard this, of this or can you point me and my mechanics in the correct direction?
Thanks for reading this and putting in your $.02

I was able to take a few video's of the noise on the way home from work today. The best sound was taken when I put the camera on the floor, in between the seat and the pedals. Listen to the raspy vibration / noise.
Video Here - from the floor.
Second Video - This one's from the dash. If you have good speakers / headphones it's easier to distinguish wind from problem.

The truck spent 2 days in the shop. Unfortunately I wasn't able to replicate the sound with the tech, nor was he able to replicate it. Frontier Guy pm'd me with some ideas, ac lines, things on the firewall, heatshield / straps. I'm going to look into these myself and see if I can't find the noise.
Any other ideas?
Also, my Volant CAI arrived. I'm reluctant to install this until the noise is figureg out out of fear warranty void from my dealer. I was thinking of talking to the serivce manager or advisor and asking them straight if it would. Do you recommend this? I know each dealership interprets the warranty differently so I thought I'd ask.
Thanks, Kevin

I found the noise, or at least the components. When the noise happens if I press the clutch pedal it stops. If you push sideways on the pedal or put your foot under the clutch and pull up it doesn't effect it. Only if you push down on it, and by pushing down I mean depress the pedal only 1/4" - 1/2".
This makes me think there's a cable on these trucks. Is this true, not a hydraulic line from the pedal to the trans? Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this one?
Frontier guy, thanks for you help and nudging me along till I found this one.

Sounds like it might be the throw-out bearing on the clutch or something else in the rotating assembly. Is there free play in your clutch pedal? How much?

Checked the pedal and the whole upper portion of the clutch. When I push on the pedal with my hand there's not too much play, maybe a 1/4" before the hydraulic piston starts to depress. There is a double spring that returns the pedal to the resting spot, everything is tight down there.
I'm not sure if when I press on the clutch to stop the noise I'm actually pushing any fluid through the piston or if I'm just taking up the free play. This would make the difference between being a rotating assembly noise and a local noise to the pedal assembly right?

I'll take a listen later today and let you know. But from the description given, it does seem like your throw out bearing.

To make a noise, something has to be moving, either through vibration or generally rotation or reciprocation in a vehicle. If you push your clutch the whole way in at a light, does the noise continue with the clutch pedal pushed down to the floor? If so, could be the throw out bearing. If the noise totally goes away when you push on the pedal, it could be a transmission noise, for example a shaft or synchros turning that stop when you push in the clutch. Does the noise occur in neutral or just in gear at speed? If you gun it with the clutch out in neutral, does the noise start at the same rpm?
Your video sounds like a metallic whine.

The noise happens in all gears but is most noticeable in 3rd and 4th. In these gears I put the gas to the floor and from 2500-3500 / 4k you can hear the noise well. This isn't to say that it doesn't happen at higher RPM but it is most noticeable at these RPM's due to other noises such as wind, engine and tires/road noise.
The problem doesn't exist when you rev the engine. At first we had no idea where it was, yesterday my girls dad helped me find it. We thought it was the hood release cable, I leaned over and pulled on it a bit while driving. This didn't stop it but I heard how loud it was from the floor. At this point I pressed on the clutch it was gone, let it back out it was there. I tried pulling up on the clutch, pressing it to the side to see if it was vibrating and it didn't change the noise / pitch at all.
When the noise happens, if you rest your foot on the clutch, like you were riding it, and push it in maybe 1/4" to 1/2" (cant really tell cause I'm going 40 and trying to stay on the road) it goes away. I can go 2500 in 3rd, gas to floor hear noise, push clutch in noise stop, let clutch out noise there, push in stop ect ect ect until I hit about 4k and am going 60mph.
I know that your thinking it's a tranny problem and it very well might be but the noise is coming from the pedal area so it would have to be a vibration traveling up through the assembly / floor. It is defnitly coming from the driver side, not the middle where the trans is.
I called 800-nissan1 to try and get auth for a rental. I have perfred warranty till 7yr 70k miles. They told me that this covers roadside assistance. Go get a rental and they will reimburse me $35/day for 5 days. It wasn't their issue they just instructed me to call the roadside help number. Anybodya have experience with these people? Am I going to get my money back or am I going to have to eat the rental bill? How long does reimbursement take?
Thanks for all your help and ideas. I will defintly pass them on to the techs troubleshooting my truck.

Just because you're getting the noise from the driver's side doesn't mean anything. You'll hear a bad differential from the transmission area a lot of times.
It almost sounds like a bad U-joint more than a throw out bearing, but with a U-joint it wouldn't go away.
I would definitely have them check out your clutch throw out bearing or slave cylinder. It could be your slave cylinder has come loose and is vibrating around, and as soon as you press the clutch pedal it connects with the linkage and stops.
As for rental, that all depends upon what your warranty does cover. Also check with your insurance... a lot of people have rental reimbursment and don't realize it. Between the 2 you could get the to cover all your rental costs.
