N00b here!

Have a quick question. I have a 99 Frontier XE automatic. And I've been getting a coolant smell in the cab, but there appears to be no leak outside. It wasn't til recently that I saw collant in the passenger side of the cab. I live in SoCal, and I rarely run the heater, but it does get annoying when I run the AC, and I smell coolant.

IS there anything I should replace? I've heard the heater core, and other things that it might be, but I am really unsure what to do at this point. .

Thanks in advance. . .

Yep that would be your heater core.  Now is just the matter of deciding if you wish to undertake such an adventure yourself, or pay to have it done.

If I recall correctly, it's not too difficult if you have had some experience.  It's not like my 90 Max and removing your entire dash.... DAMN YOU NISSAN

..

WindzOne;

Be glad you don't have a GM Tah-hore!

You can take the heater core out of the circuit read by-pass but don’t block that circuit.

Have a good one and see you later… Don S..

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State .

A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer! One took my wife!... J/K

Mucho thank you. Do you know how much the part ands hoses would cost?. . .I have a weekend to just work on my truck. . .(It's due for an oil change anyway)

(GM Tah-hore) . . . .Oddly enough. . . .That would have been my other choice if I didn't need the extra space for my DJ equipment!

Well if you think you can tackle it, make sure you have a chiltons or other service manual.  Read up on it before you try to tackle it.  If you're still up to it, start removing the dash.

Call ahead to a Napa or other parts store and see if they have one on hand.  Napa carries them for $340ish, courtesyparts.com might have them for cheaper.  Start taking apart your dash and working toward the heater core.  Before you take it out, start up the truck (plug in your in Airbag stuff it all possible to avoid a code) and see if it is the heater core leaking.  It could just be a loose clamp, or a leaking hose.

If it's the heater core, you can get it first thing Saturday morning and have it all back in by the end of the day.  Napa usually does have a return policy, so if it doesn't turn out to the be the problem you can take it back.  There might be a restocking fee, but you'll have to check with your local parts store.

Hopefully it is just a hose. . . Had a Chilton when I got the truck, so that's no issue. My roomate and I work on cars fo fun anyway. . .so this is gun be cool. . . .

not a whole lot of coolant in the passenger side, but it's worth a shot at this point. . .the dash shouldn't be a problem, or even to see if it is. . .The airbag on the other hand, is a different story.

Thanks kcidmil!!

Well check with the chiltons to see how you're supposed to replace it.  There may be a way to do it without having to pull the complete dash out.
