Howdy everyone,

I have a '00 Nissan 4 dr, Frontier 2wd that just up and died on us Sunday. Drove about 15 miles, stopped to eat for about 1 hr, started it to leave, backed up about 3 ft and it just died!!
It cranks fine but won't start. It is a standard 5 sp., V6 3.3L (I think) has 109,000 miles, just had a tune-up (plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor cap, filters, etc...) and a timing belt replaced (maintenance, not broken) about 1000 miles ago.
I pulled the dist.cap to check for a spark and I don't get any. (probed a screwdriver in the coil hole, where the spring is, and cranked it) I smell gas so I don't think it's a fuel pump which is what I suspected initially.
Is there anything common/problematic with these trucks I need to check for? Someone told me they have a problem with electrical connectors corroding. Does this sound like that maybe? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Check your chassis grounds one more check your coil conections are tight and clean Also check around your trailer harrness if you have one

Hey thanks dannyg but let me ask: What would my trailer harness have to do with it not starting?? I don't understand! I do have a utility trailer hook-up.(lights only) Or is there something else called a "trailer harness"?

Check fuses as well.  You also may have a coil that died on you or that has a loose wire.  Sometimes coils just give up the ghost and then NO spark!

It has to be something affecting the firing of all your plugs so it can't be a plug or plug wire.  Go to the coil, check the distributor rotor (did the tip break off?)

DO you have lights and other electricl parts like radio that still operate or is the whole electrical system kaput?

danny here to the T harness check the main wiring harness plug were your trailer harness connects to for fradeo corrode conections and wires its the corrosion that could cause a short.To the no spark get a spark checkerer a little one for a lawnmower can work fine when your truck acts up check it don` worry what jug you have it hooked too just see if theres spark

I still have all electrical. Rotor looks fine. It just won't start.
Don't have a bunch of spare time right now, I'll probably pull it to my Mech this evening.

Latest development:

Don't have time to mess with this thing now so I was going to pull it to my mechanic. It played out on Sunday and I was going to pull it Wednesday. Just out of curiosity I was going to see if it would start, and it did!!

Drove it to the mech and it's been there since with him starting it and driving it a few time every day but it keeps on going for him.

I really won't trust this thing until we find out why it quit. Don't want to get stuck again, it may not be in such a ideal situation as last time!!

Does this bring up any ideas??

I have a 2000 Frontier as well. It's a 5 speed, but 4wd. I was informed yesterday that it's pretty much dead. And my problem started out similar to yours, although mine had about 180,000 miles on it. Awful.

The story: Car wouldn't start, kept it parked in a parking lot over night. Went back the next day, started. Drove to mechanic. Started still. Drove for a week and it worked the whole time. finally, it didn't start again. Pushed it to mechanic (two blocks away!). He began a long process...

It smelled like gas, unburned, in the engine. Especially when I tried to start it often. He thought it was a plugged catalytic converter, not letting fuel pass through, returning it to the engine. He took it apart though and saw a cracked manifold, clearing me of the high priced Cat problem, which was great news. The cat was not in great shape, but still fine. He moved beyond the manifold and saw that my timing belt was four teeth off, and thought he found the problem. He's a friend of mine, so he was happy to have saved me the money. He fixed the belt, and found that once it was on correctly it again wouldn't crank. He had it staring again before he took it apart, by cranking it himself. He was pissed now though that his solution had again locked it up.

He got a snake camera sort of thing, went into my engine and has since found metal and some kind of shards in my pistons. The problem must have started there and passed itself slowly outward: timing belt, manifold, cat, unburned gas smell. He traced it in backward.

I'm pretty much screwed and must now decide if its worth it to buy or rebuild an engine. It'sprobably not, because the car has so many miles. The other option is to sell it for scraps, which is depressing since it still looks and (had previously) ran great.

Any thoughts? I don't know much about cars. Maybe this is a worthwhile post for the guy whose car won't start, but I'm also looking for some guidance myself. How much could I make selling it for scraps? Ball park.

Glad you signed up and posted.

I’m assuming that your's is a V-6. Was that the original belt? The belt keeps the valves in proper timing while the pistons move up and down so they don’t hit each other.

... The 3.3 V-6 belt are supposed to be replaced at a little over 100,000 miles because when they break or slip heavy damage happens to the valves, pistons, rods and crank.
