I have a 2001 SC and would like to know if I can run the truck by disconnecting the super charger? If I need to change anything else to eliminate super charger?

After getting no advice about whether or not it is safe to disconnect super charger,I asked a couple of local mechanics that I trust. They both concurred that if I could stand the power loss that it would not hurt the engine.I took the belt off of the SC (which also runs the air conditioning) and will closely moniter the gas milage. So far I think I can live with power loss as motor seems to run ok just has less power.

The reason I want to eliminate the SC is due to 10mpg when pulling my boat and about 13 mpg whith normal driving.I hope to gain 3 to 5 mpg.Through the winter months I am only getting 11 or 12 mpg.I love my Fronty, but I really hate the gas milage.I could be driving a full sise GM and get 3-6 mpg better and that really sucks.

Gassed up today and got 14 mph. I had lots of short trips and 10 degree temp. outside. I think a 2.5 to 3 mpg improvement or about 25% better mpg.I will continue to monitor and report back. I am not recomending that anyone else disable thier SC,I am just relating my experience.

I pulled boat 200 miles this last weekend and got 11.4mpg. I see a small improvement but, not as much as I hoped.I will need to decide if this small gain is woth it.

Doesn't disabling the SC allow you to go from premum to regular gas?  That should be a big savings, particulalrly if you are getting an improvement in MPG.

I have been using ethanal ever since I owned this SC, and havent had any pings or bad effects. I pulled the boat 200 miles the last two days and am back down to 10.5 mpg. I guess I will hook up SC and forget triing to get any kind of decent gas milage out of this truck. I really think this gas milage is digusting and Nissan ought to be ashamed,I feel I made a mistake for ever buying the gas hog.

That does sound a bit low unless you are drag racing at every light?  I haven't driven my 01 S/C Frontier all that much but I got right around 20 mpg in mine on the highway going about 70-80 MPH.  I was happy with that as my 3.0L Hardbody (2WD) got about the same milage, with far less power.  Pulling a boat I can understand the milage being less but you should be over 15 even in the city driving.

You can't just pull the S/C belt off and disconnect it.  If it didn't spin, there would be a huge obstruction in the air intake of your engine.  I would recommend a K&N intake and/or a free flowing exhaust.  I haven't put one on my Frontier yet but they have dramatically improved power and milage on my other vehicles.  K&N claims nearly 15 HP gains with their intake.  Anything you can do to remove restriction either before or after the engine (intake/exhaust)  will improve its efficiency.

Even if you could just remove the supercharger, the engine has a much lower compression ratio to allow for the increased pressure the s/c adds.  The engine would have a lot less power than the N/A 3.3L V-6.

The best thing to do for better fuel economy (if everything is working fine with your engine) is a free flowing intake and exhaust and trying to accelerate slower from stop lights.  If it has higher miles, sometimes changing the O2 sensor (s) can help.  Also changing spark plugs and tune up items can help but they only add maybe 1 or 2 mpg.  The K&N would be the best "bang for the buck"- costing about $240 and should get you at least 3 mpg better economy.

You say you are burning ethanol.  Do you mean E-85?  If so, your mileage will be low.  E-85 has far less energy per gallon.  Try regular gasoline instead and check your mileage. You should expect a 25-40% increase in gas mileage!
