I recently purchased a 2000 Frontier 2wd with 100526 miles.  On the way home from the dealership the service engine light came on.  The next day I went to O'Reilly's and had them check the code.  It came back as a 4th cylinder missing.  I replaced all 4 spark plugs, put new wires and went ahead and change the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and front brake pads.  One of the two problems I am having also was present on the drive home but I didn't notice it because you had to be driving between 40 and 50 and putting only light pressure on the pedal as if you are trying to maintain a certain speed.  The steering shakes and feels like the front end shakes but as soon as you let off the gas or give it more gas it stops.  It also doesn't happen above 55 mph.  The service enging light went off after I had them reset it and then came back on after replacing all the plugs and such.  The light would flash twice then stay steady.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can not find anything on the web even close to this problem.

Bad motor mounts or a failed U-joint could explain the shake.  What about a partially failed head gasket at #4 cylinder?  Is there coolant in your oil?

The oil was clean and the misfire has been corrected with the new wires and plugs.  Or at least the service engine light has not come back on or flickered since I disconnected the battery.  Would bad motor mounts of U-joints cause it to only shake between 40 and 55 with around 2000 rpm.  That is the wierd part to me.  I have never had one shake like that at a specific speed and rpm.  If you are going faster than 40 to 55 at 2000rpm it doesn't do it and vice versa.

It could be a harmonic in the driveline that is amplified by a bad mount or a driveshaft balance issue.  DO you have a two piece driveshaft that has a hanger bearing?  Or it could be something as simple as a wheel/tire out of balance.

Good advice from Boomer!

You should also try moving the front tires to the rear and note if there is a differents.

I had tires that acted like you discribe.

The tires could be improperly balanced, damaged or out of round.

... I bought a set of tires at 4W Parts in Ft.Worth  and after four tries they were un able to balance the tires and the replacement tires was just as bad. I took my Frontier to another shop and they balanced the tires perfectly the first try. 4W Parts sold me defective tires that were 3.5 oz out of balance and would only replace them with other defective tires!

I ended up buying a good ones at Costco.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Why did the U.S Government remove food and fuel from the inflation rate?... It sounds better at 4% … I think some of us know better!…
