Well, I finally changed my trans and rear end oil. I used Royal Purple 75w-90. Its GL-4 and GL-5 compatible, and its actually purple.

I did not have problems with my trans before I switched. Now I notice that it shifts much smoother than it did before, and it goes into gear much easier when I'm stopped.

They claim it will increase my gas mileage. I'll watch it closely and update after I run a few tanks.

It took me about 3 1/3 quarts to fill the trans and rear end. I filled until oil ran out the fill hole. Filling the trans was a little tricky because the bottles won't fit next to the trans's fill hole. I used a 5 foot long tube from the fill hole to under the hood. That was a lot easier than using a syringe or a squirt bottle. The rear end was easier to fill, but getting the drain and fill plugs off was HELL. Here's a tip: use a breaker bar, an extension, and all the upper body muscles you have.

Just a little update.

Before I switched, my gas mileage was anywhere between 24 and 25 mpg on the highway with some city driving. After funning 2 tanks, I am getting 26 and 27 mpg in the same driving conditions.  So it looks like about a 1-3 mpg increase.

So far, it looks like I did get an increase in mpg. What I'm really looking for is an increase in transmission life. Hopefully I can get 200,000 before a rebuild......hopefully.
