I'll try one more time...

After a cylinder head exchange with cylinder head and exhaust manifold removal on the vehicle and simply pulling head straight up....

Car sits and idles at 800-1000 on the RPM guage like a new one. Starts the instant you turn the key....here is the problem.

When accelerating you can apply VERY light pressure to the throttle and she will slowly to 3-4 K rpm. Then if you try to go higher she fails "bbwwaaahhhh" and drops back to idle range.

When you accelerate as you would from a take off she doesn't even go to 3-4 K rpm but simply fails and "bbwwaaahhh" as the engine fails to accelerate.  This both at a load and no load condition.

I have checked the timing and it is on 20BTDC and I have even unbolted the distributor and rotated the distributor while trying to accelerate.  No doing.

Is it the cam position sensor in the distributor that is not letting it advance the timing?

Is it the fule pressure that may be too low?

Is it the crank sensor? (Thought these were either good or bad..???)

Thanks for any help or suggestions?

98 2.4L 4-cyl DOHC

Here are my next steps this weekend.  I want to make sure the fuel pressure is right.

- Don't see a schrader valve but guess I have to cut into the line with a T and a guage?

- If I don't find anything there I want to clean the MAF with alcohol or suitable contact cleaner.

- Short of that working, I would have to start looking at the distributor which has the cam sensor in there. Don't know what the heck I can do with that. Any way of testing that, short of towing this thing to the dealer?

Thanks for the help.

I  agree with dannyg.  Sounds to me like a clogged fuel filter.  It will pass enough fuel to run at  idle but can't deliver enough at higher power demands.  Blow pressure back through the fule line and restart.  See what happens.

Ok, Will do that this evening and post.  I will disconnect both supply and return lines and blow them back through to the tank, reconnect and start.  If pump is working fine and I was able to blow back a clog then I should see a difference immediately which would prompt me to change filter....right?

Thanks!

Update / Update / Update....

Took the fuel line off tonight and I wasn't impressed with the flow...in fact if I were a urologist and it were my patient...I would be scheduling an operation on the prostate..ha!

I blew compressed air back into the supply line and it wouldn't blow at all.  I took the cap off the tank and had my son listen and it never reached the tank. I don't believe that the air pressure can make it back through the filter (if it has one in the line) and then through the workings of the pump.

Is this fuel filter not in the tank below the pump? Or does it have one in the line along the body.  If so then I could disconnect the line at the filter, blow back to there and then put a new filter on it.  The gas didn't smell too awful fresh either... Said it was sitting for a couple of months but may have been longer.

Gandl2123, I have a 2007 and know on that the the filter is in the tank.  I don't know where it is on yours.  Hopefully, Lakota can answer this.  If he doesn't weigh in, go to the website below and send the author an E-mail.

gandl2123;

I can not say whether it has a filter in the tank. The system might have and anti drain-back valve and/ a roll-over shut off valve preventing you from blowing backward and could even be the main problem.  Trace the fuel line back to the filter, remove it and blow it out from the out let side … Do this gently on a paper towel and then look at the towel for trash. Then replace the filter.

... Trace the fuel line back to the tank for leaks cracks and kinks.

Is the fuel old??? If so drain it and later (after you get the truck running) mix it 50-50 with fresh fuel and use it.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..
