as an individual who is interested in extended OCI's but also wanting my oil to perform to it's max, I have been considering a remotely mounted oil filter with the possiblity of also mounting a cooler inline with it. However, with the oil filter being mounted away the normal mounting line, and lines being exposed to incoming air, a cooler might be overkill as there is a need for oil temp to be at operating temps.

One of the reasons I am considering this option is because nissan for some reason has a tiny ass oil capacity on the 3.3's....3.5qts. that's silly IMO. The 2.4L versions (i don't know about the newer 2.5L's) have a higher oil capacity recommendation than the 3.3's. The new 4.0's have a better displacement to oil capacity ratio, with it being over 5 qts I believe. When browsing through my chilton's i also noticed that the 3.5's that were the same year as my frontier...they had a 5.4 qt oil capacity...not what's what i would like for mien to be, but i haven't thus far been able to track down any aftermarket pans for the 3.3's. If anyone has any leads, it'd be appreciated. Now the reason I'm considering this oil filter option is that the filter on these models is also very small IMO, if i could increase it and get more filtration, than that could also extend OCI's. I do realize that this might have an effect on oil pressure, but what say you, as long as i'm not running a ridiculously long line, it shouldn't really affect pressure too much, that is...it should be fairly negligible.

..

Frontyfan;

I See your concern.

... I Have seen several oil filters cut open to show the ‘guts’. Even the Wix is very simple.

... The Toyota '08 Camry filter is smaller than the '99 Frontier V-6 Filter and about the same as the Sentra Filter. I saw a cutaway of the Camry filter and was impressed with it’s design. I haven’t seen a cutaway of the Frontier filter but think it’s probably a good design.

... I would have liked more oil in the crank case.

I have read at another site that the Nissan filter has cardboard end caps like a Fram but do not have first hand knowledge of this.  Can anyone comment on this either way?  I would be very hesitant to run such a design as I have had a Fram disintegrate on me some years ago and spread cardboard around the engine.

Lakota-  yeah, I just feel like they could have given us a bigger oil pan and a bigger filter. I figure if i can remotely mount a filter, than i can get a bigger one, which would give me more oil as far as total volume, even if i just use a double filter setup, than i have twice the volume in the filter plus twice the filtration.

Boomer- When did you hear this, I've heard and read that Nissan Filters were actually pretty good filters (the ones made in japan), and i heard that some were being made in china for Nissan, and some concern was had, and might still be over those, however i did find a link here, where a guy cut a bunch of filters apart just to observe construction differences. The link i am going to put in here purports to have a japanese made nissan filter and then a chinese made filter, he observed nothing major that would give him concern. the caveat is, he doesn't claim to be a filter expert, nor do i, he was just doing this i guess out of curiosity. you can click back the main page to find more pictures of more filters he did. As far as fram goes, i've heard them bashed all over the place, but to be honest, i've used them for a long time and never had any (knock on wood) filter failures, i do not buy the infamous orange can anymore tho, i do spend a little more money on the tough guard, which i've heard that even those who bash fram, would use if they were to use a fram filter. i am not sure if those have the cardboard endcaps or not.

Frontyfan, thanks for the link!  Sure looks like metal end caps to me.  I have used Nissan OEM filters with no problems but I sure did not want another Fran "carboard explosion".  I'll continue to use Nissan and Wix.  My dealer now only handles the Chinese Nissan filters.

Just be careful with Fram.  They all use cardboard end caps, like a shoebox cardboard.  For just a tad more cost, you can get a much better filter that does not have that construction.  Stop by a NAPA store sometime.  They often have a NAPA (Wix) Gold filter and a Fram cut open at the counter to show you the difference.
