I am a Petroleum Landman, I bought the so-called Off Road package NISMO because my job requires me to be Off-Road.  I didn't want it because it looked cool like the majority of Nismo buyers.  2006 Nismo Crew Cab 77K miles.  Here's my story.  I installed an AEM air intake, similar to K&N but better.  I had no problems with this truck during the WARRANTY years, which didn't last too long.  At around 77K miles I noticed a whining noise when I hit the gas.  I decided to rotate the tires and that's when I noticed Axle Grease caked all over the rear driver's side rotor, brakes, and caliper.  I was floored, I immediately knew something was up.  I had a mechanic pull the axle and sure enough the rear drive assembly was toast.

Now the question I have is as well as many others is what went wrong?  That remains the Million Dollar Question but for now it is going to cost me $2586.15.  That is the price for a new rear assembly from the dealer, and does not include the labor to put it on.  Attempts to reach Nissan have left me empty handed and I vow to never step foot onto another Nissan lot as long as I'm on this earth.

Feel Free to share your story or add to mine.

im very sorry to hear that man but i cant help but ask. did you ever do routine maintence and notice that your axle seal was leaking? its very easy to spot and not uncommon at all on anycar with that many miles in "off road" conditions such as your own to see issues like this. had you replaced the axle seal earlier this would have never happen. but yeah when is starts to whine ur done.

I was wondering the same thing Chris6744.  Though I have heard of a few failures on the axles on these trucks, especially the Nismo.

Not only that, but 77k is a hell of a lot for an 06.  I have less than 30k on my 06 and I drive a good amount.

Oh and BTW -- if you actually looked at what the offroad package had versus didn't have, you don't really need it. It doesn't really give you that much of an advantage.  I drive my SE offroad fairly frequently with no problems.  The SE still has 30+degreee approach/departure and 10+ inches of clearance.

These Nismo axles are modified Dana 44's if I remember correctly and to get all the eqipment into the axle, I have read that the ring gear is cut thinner and that this causes trouble.  I don't know why they just didn't use a regular Dana 44 or similar axle so that aftermarket parts would be available like they are for a Jeep.  This is the trouble with engineering groups these days.  Everybody has to add their "touch" even if a dependable use-tested alternative is available.  It justifies the job so you don't get fired.

I agree on the Nismo and the SE.  I have an SE and use it for hunting.  It does well off-road and gets me through mud and dirt and snow with no problems.
