Just a quick question.  I like to keep my PS fluid fresh so when I do oil changes, I like to pump out the PS resorvoir and refill it with fresh fluid.  I also like to do this between oil changes as well.  Now the question I have been researching on the Web is whether Nissan PS fluid (fairly expensive) is the same as Dexron III ATF.  I note that in my owners manual it says to use Nissan PS fluid but if you are in Canada you can use Dexron ATF.  I have seen both sides of this argument taken on various Nissan sites on the Web.  Anybody have any definitive knowledge on this or experience?  Your thoughts and observations would be appreciated.  If ATF is allowed, I would use Mobil 1 full syn ATF.

Boomer,

Nissan p/s fluid is not the same as ATF, though I doubt that ATF would cause much of a problem. P/S fluid is a hydraulic fluid that doesn't run at up to 300degrees or have clutch plates in the system like the transmission, so it is formulated differently and has different additive packages. I wouldn't run it in your new truck unless you want to take the chance of voiding your warrantee.  Nissan p/s fluid is $2.79 from www.mynismo.com which really isn't that much more expensive than any other p/s fluid, at least not here in California.  You can get factory Nissan ATF(expensive) P/S fluid, air filter, cabin air filter, oil filter, drain plug gaskets, belts & hoses etc... for really good prices.

I do the same thing. Spending a couple extra bucks every oil change to change out your p/s fluid will prevent a VERY expensive rack and pinion from going bad prematurely, not to mention the pump. I also drain and refill (not flush) the trans. every other oil change because most of my driving is around town.

Well, I happened to be near the dealer where I bought my Frontier this morning so I stopped in and asked the service and parts folks about PS fluid.  Turns out they don't even bother to carry it.  They just use Dexron III in all of their Nissans that go through service.  Said that the fluid is just rebottled ATF fluid and to just go ahead and use ATF to keep my system clean.  So there, for what it's worth, is my dealer's opinion on the subject.  And I specifically asked if Mobil 1 ATF was OK and they said that was fine.

If the dealer said OK, then OK.  Any oil of the same viscosity will work for a hydraulic system, the problem comes in when there are additives that make the seals swell.

So, if they don't use their own p/s fluid, I wonder if they use their own ATF?  Most if not all quick lube places only use Dextron III and add an additive to it like Lubeguard, so, I wonder if they do the same?

It is interesting, isn't it?  And go online to most of the places (not all) that sell Nissan parts and almost none of them offer Nissan PS Fluid.  There must be a reason for that.  In a Google search under "Mobil 1 ATF for power steering fluid", there are numerous sites that talk about using that fluid in new PS systems for Toyota, Nissan, Benz, etc.   I shared your concerns, Nelson37, about the fluid which is why I brought up the topic.  And thanks for your responses!  If you ever hear/see anything else on this topic, please post it here and I'll do likewise.
