My handle does nothing.  Something has broken or come undone.  I can reach in the back (aftermarket lock installed on inside tailgate) and pull each of the rods that go to the latch mechanisms and nothing happens.   HOW DO I OPEN THE GATE TO GET TO THE LATCHES TO FIX WHATEVER IS BROKEN!!!!?????

Thanks in advance!  (this has me more perplexed than working on my Delorean!)

I'm assuming you have opened up the access panel on the backside of the tailgate when you say you pulled the rods.(... If not, that's where you get access to the handle)  You will have to pull both at the same time.  (again, not exactly sure what you are doing with the information provided in your post...)  What happens when you pull those rods?  Can you see or feel them pulling back against you?  As in, does it feel like they're actually pulling on something that has a spring action?  Are you able to see if they are pulling on the latch pins?  Maybe you're not pulling them quite far enough?
