Im new to the forums, my name is Dave. I have a 2004 Frontier 2.4L 5spd. I love it. I put on a Cherry Bomb Muffler and an APC cold air intake. The muffler has been on for a year and a half, and the intake on for about 3 months. I have had no problems what so ever, just increased power! Until, I re-oiled the air filter. I realize now that I put WAAAYYY too much oil in the air filter, and since I re-oiled it the truck has ran bad. I notice it sounds different, lacks power, idles horrible, and it jumps sometimes when going at a constant speed like 55.
I took the intake apart, and oil had been sucked up the pipe coming from the filter. It did not look like any had gotten into the throttle body though, but just in case I sprayed some Throttle Body cleaner in to it. I removed and cleaned the MAF sensor with the cleaner, and blew out the excess oil out of the filter with and air compressor. I was happy with all the work I did, so I took it for a test drive.
NOTHING CHANGED!!
A few sites I saw said that if the MAF sensor is bad, disconnect it and the engine will run better, if it does then thats the problem. So I tried that. At idle it purred like a kitten, then I revved it up to 2000rpms and it started popping and spitting and running rough. Now Im lost. I would just change the sensor to see if that changes anything but its expensive.
By the way...the Check Engine light only came on once, Auto Zone said it was the MAF sensor. It did not come on again until I ran it without the sensor hooked up.
Any help, advice or anything to help me more accurately diagnose this problem would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!

... Sorry but I can't answer that... It could still be the oil. But welcome to the group.

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State . A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer!

I think I'll try getting a new filter, maybe one that was mentioned in that forum or K&N filter. In the mean time keep the suggestions coming.
Does anyone think the oil that got in the intake manifold could still be one of my problems...like if it got all over the injectors (im not sure thats possible, but I don't know)?
Thanks
Dave

... I've read somewhere these sensors are touchy.
Just in case you have to buy a new one here are two posts from another forum:
Quote:
I have the same problem and I've done a lot of parts research because I got the same quote from the dealer. The problem is that they aren't interchangeable with other makes for some reason. I got one fromwww.usednissanparts.com. It only cost me $175. I just bought it for my 94 hardbody 4cyl. Hope this helps. |

Well, this is what I recommend, type in the part number on google, and then go to google products.
Trust me on this. I had to buy a new TBPS and Nissan wanted me to spend 375 for it and I found it for 13. |

I called Auto Zone to see if they had a MAF in stock. They said its $488, and I would have to get something reprogrammed by the dealer. What the hell? Shouldn't the ECM recognize a properly working MAF sensor when I turn the truck on?

Ok...I thought I fixed it! I got another air filter and everything seemed fine. Then the rough idle showed up again. This sucks! Any other ideas?

Today I played around with it some more. When I have the AC on it idles normal, the rpms don't fluctuate and it doesn't pop or miss or anything. Once i turn the AC off, or the compressor cycles off, it slowly drops idle speed and pops n misses the whole time. Sometimes it idles down to around 600rpms (when its this low, she ain't happy) then it tries to increase rpms but it keeps missing.
What happens when the compressor for the AC comes on that makes the engine run different than at normal idle?
Also, what is the normal idle speed? When the compressor is on, mine is at just under 1000, Ill say...950rpms. Is that the normal idle speed or is it lower?
Could this be caused by an idle speed sensor?

Well...I think I fixed the problem. Apparently when I changed the filter oil, I cracked the vacuum hoses that I had rigged up when I put the intake on. I attached all those hoses together better than I had and now its running damn close to how it was before I screwed it up. THANK GOD IT WAS NOT THE $488 MAF SENSOR!!!
