I have an 04 XE 4x4 Crew and I have run into a problem with the locking mechanism and handle in the tailgate.  I opened up the access panel and noticed that the handle becomes disengaged when pulled 2-3 times.  At this point this handle is rendered useless and the locking mechanism will not work.  After doing some further investigating I noticed a plastic post may have broken off that fits into a notch and keeps the mechanism from sliding out of place. I've been trying to find a replacement online but unsuccessful.  Not sure if this is a dealer part only or is there a suitable replacement for the current handle and operating mechanism.  Most of the handles I have looked at online will not fit the 04 Frontier do to the plastic piece that houses the handle. Any advice?

Logdog;

I have not seen the broken part but it may be possible to 'remanufacture' or repair it with J.B.WELD. I've repaired hundreds of things with J.B.WELD. From leaking gas tanks and radiators to thread guides on sewing machines. It is possible to make a wax mold and cast a part with J.B.WELD. Don't use the fast cure type.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Corn Ethanol: Our government is hoodwinking Americans and making a few people rich. We have a 50 cent per gallon tariff against importing ethanol and subsidize our ethanol refiners 54 cents per gallon with our tax dollars. And using Corn Ethanol is driving food prices up!  Have you been to the grocery store this week! Another case where corporate lobbyists make the laws!

The problem is, I cannot find the piece that may have broken off to make a mold.  I'll take some pics and post them as soon as I can.  So people can see what I'm talking about.  It's hard to explain without showing.  Never had this problem in the past with the continued use of the tailgate handle.  Only recently when I started using the lock several times when I traveled from WI to WA.

I've taken my tailgate apart and I don't remember there being any holes in the tailgate for the part to fall out. shouldn't the broken piece still be bouncing around in there?
