Hi, i own a 2002 desert runner and lately it has been making a very annoying clicking sound from the engine. To me it sounds like it does it every time a valve opens or closes or when an injector fires.  It does it mostly when the engine has a load on it like when i am accelerating. It was hooked up to a computer and i was told that te knock sensor was bad. the sound is the loudest when the engine is warming up.  I have tried using different oil wieghts and higher octane gas and changing the fuel filter but nothing worked.  It really pisses me off it makes my truck sound like a piece of junk(which it most certainly is not). Should i get this knock sensor thing checked out. please please help me

hey I went to Amarillo High School in '53  ahs53

Welcome to the group!

A clicking noise may be a blown gasket, cracked exhaust manifold or a sticky valve. In most engines pre-ignition (pinging) is more of a rattling sound. The fuel is exploding rather than fast burning correctly. If it's pinging get it fixed soon! Causes can be bad timing, knock sensors, carbon build up and rotten gasoline.

Please inform us which engine you have … guessing it’s a 3.3... someone else may have better info..

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State . A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer!

... I’d look at the tail pipe black soot buildup and pull a couple of spark plugs to see if there is any sign of carbon deposits. Ether way I’d try a fuel additive like Lucas or Techroline and not use full engine power for several hundred miles giving the stuff time to work.

... Another would be to try Seafoam that you pour in the intake with the engine revved up to prevent it from dieing. Seafoam will cause a lot of smoke

These remedies will in time clean plugs, EGR systems, fuel injectors, intakes, valves, and firing chambers.

If an engine has carbon buildup it can raise the compression ratio causing pinging, and it can glow red hot causing pre-ignition.

Remember don’t let it ping too much or you’ll need new pistons

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Higher fuel mileage? We need a government study to show the benefits of making ethanol from Marijuana plants.

Alas .. Probably be more suicides from those trying to die by exhaust fumes

is it hard to replace a knock sensor on an 02 v6, does anybody have any idea how much it would cost to get a new one put in??

I got a bad knock sensor computer read out on mine, but they couldn't tell me if the knock sensor was actually bad or if it just adjusted the timing last time I was pulling a load.  On my 2000 3.3L the knock sensor is under neath the intake manifold.  So it's a 3 second plug to pull out and replace, but to get to it, you have to remove the intake and other items in the way.

You should test your knock sensor before you order a new one to replace it.  I seem to recall the way to test it is to run a multimeter from pin 64 to ground.  Let me see if I can find the "official instructions."  Ah.  Found it.

Cheers,

:Isaac:

1 CHECK INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUIT-I

1. Turn ignition switch OFF.

2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.

3. Check resistance between ECM terminal 64 and engine ground.

NOTE:

It is necessary to use an ohmmeter which can measure more than 10 MΩ.

SEF704U

Resistance:

Approximately 500 - 620 kΩ [at 25°C (77°F)]

4. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.

OK GO TO 5.

NG GO TO 2.

2 CHECK INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUIT-II

1. Disconnect knock sensor harness connector.

2. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal 64 and terminal 1.

SEF642W

Continuity should exist.

3. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.

OK GO TO 4.

NG GO TO 3.

3 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART

Check the following.

 Harness connector F37, F101

Harness for open or short between ECM and knock sensor

Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

4 CHECK KNOCK SENSOR

Refer to Component Inspection, EC-333.  (pasted below)

OK or NG

OK GO TO 8.

NG Replace knock sensor.

5 RETIGHTEN GROUND SCREWS

Loose and retighten engine ground screws.

AEC640A

GO TO 6.

6 CHECK SHIELD CIRCUIT

1. Disconnect harness connectors F37, F101.

2. Check harness continuity between harness connector F37 and engine ground.

Continuity should exist.

3. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.

OK or NG

OK GO TO 8.

NG GO TO 7.

7 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART

Check the following.

 Harness connectors F37, F101

 Joint connectors - 1

Harness for open or short between harness connector F37 and engine ground

Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

8 CHECK INTERMITTENT INCIDENT

Refer to TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS FOR INTERMITTENT INCIDENT, EC-133.

INSPECTION END

Component Inspection

NEEC0182

KNOCK SENSOR

NEEC0182S01

Use an ohmmeter which can measure more than 10 MΩ.

1. Disconnect knock sensor harness connector.

2. Check resistance between terminal 2 and ground.

Resistance: 500 - 620 kΩ [at 25°C (77°F)]

CAUTION:

Do not use any knock sensors that have been dropped or

physically damaged. Use only new ones.
