Hello, first post here.  Had a problem with my steering wheel that i though i would post to maybe help someone else in the future...

I got into a wreck and broke the steering gearbox, airbag did not go off or anything, relatively minor, except for the gearbox...

In the process of repair i must have turned the steering wheel too many times in one direction while it was not connected to anything. I broke the clockspring (why is it called that)

The horn quit working and the airbag light started blinking, i did the door switch trick to see the diagnostic code in the airbag light, it read driver side airbag, i assumed i must have broken some wires or something because it worked fine even after the tow, then after the repairs, kaput....

Took apart the steering wheel and got to the clockspring and pried it apart with a little screwdriver (carefully) and sure enough one end of the long ribbon cable was ripped off...

got it all soldered back on and re-wound it, it goes halfway around the inside then through the slot in the roller ring then the other half round the outside ring.  Snapped it all back together and then checked to see if it would turn freely, goes just short of 7 turns between ends, make sure and put it back in the middle and put it all back together...

works great, had to do the door trick again twice to get it to reset the airbag out of diagnostic mode, but the horn and everything works great...  So if your clockspring goes bad, or you break it like me, you can fix it...

mdettmann;

Welcome to the group!

I had to go into my '76 Wagoneer coulomb (it’s an old GM tilt job) it was no fun...  If my Nissan breaks I’m coming over to your place!

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..
