... I haven’t kept up with modern engines. But the old American push rod and hydraulic lifters could make a similar sound while a lifter was pumping up.
I’ve had several engines do it and didn’t seem to have much impact on engine life. This problem occurred in engines with 40,000 or more miles and/or engines with poor oil maintainace. Changing the oil or the blend of oil sometimes reduced the noise.
