I requested a Mobile 1 syn oil change from my dealer for the 2nd time. Both times they had "Mobile 1" listed on my receipt and charged me for a synthetic oil change. The tech marked the change interval on the windshield sticker as 3000 miles. That got me curious.

I checked the oil, and it is golden honey brown (like conventional oil).

I thought Mobil 1 was coal black in color?

Am I a rockhead, or am I getting ripped off by my dealership?
Thanks,
Jerry

Nope... most oils are all the goldish brown till they begin to break down due to wear and heat, synthetics included.  Some oils, Fire Resistant Hyd 10w, are reddish.

Enjoy the coloring while you can.  There are many vehicles I've changed the oil on, and they have such a bad sludge build up, that even after changing it, the residue changes the new oil to black.

Or you could always do like the army, take a sample and have it tested.  Some vehicles have been known to go about a year without an oil change.

Man... I wish I had the energy to change mine.  After fixing vehicles all day I come home and don't want to even think about touching mine.

BTW I can beat Wal-mart's price.  I just spent $42 for 15 qts.

Yours $4.40 qt
Mine $2.80 qt, and not some cheapy stuff either.  Rotella, best stuff for diesel engines.

Just a comment about synthetic oil, I've been running Mobile 1 for the last 5 years, my bro ran it in his truck also, 10w-30 in the summer, 5w-30 in the winter. I've done the research and Mobile 1 is one of the best Synthetics out there, its proven excellant for cold starts, although, don't be changing your oil every 8000km like most say to do, I change it every 3000 to 4000km. There are many different variables that can cause your oil to break down and its better to be safe than sorry, plus its better for the engine. I found that at about 3 to 4000km my oil was due for a change anyways.

Thanks Bro, I'm going to keep it to 3-4K change as you suggested!

Cheers!

I change mine at every 7500 miles...then again I am using Amsoil, but that is
not any better, just not the same for comparison's sake...

oops,   Sorry about the blank post.  I  have been using Royal Purple.  Any opions on this oil.  Tracy from "Trucks" swears by it.  They claim a huge decrease in friction and better gas milage if you replace all friction reduction fluids with their brand.  Just curious

I'm from northern canada, never heard of royal purple, and I watch trucks, great show by the way. I myself have done alot of research on this oil and living up here were dealt with cold temps warming and cooling and mobile 1 seems to be the oil for these parts, thats not to say royal purple doesn't work well for your conditions, extreme warm weather etc. My opinion is do some research on the stuff, oil is extremely important on determining how long an engine will last.
