We have a 2000 frontier v6 auto 4x4 and we are wanting to possibly tow a camper cross-country. We have read that the towing capacity is 5000 lbs but we just don't want to trash "Maggie". Is 5000 lbs a realistic weight or should we stick to 75% of that? We have a hitch and we know that we will probably need trailer brakes. We have also read about transmission coolers. Do we really need this? Is there anything else we should consider in modifications to Maggie? Me and the Mrs. love our truck and want to keep her healthy and happy!!!!

I have overloaded my old 2002 2.4L 4x2, it was a short trip but it handled it just fine.

How big of a camper is it?

If you want to hit that 5000lbs mark right on.  I would suggest trailer brakes with brake controller, and the transmisson cooler.  The cooler can be a life saver.  Also I would have the truck looked over with a fine tooth comb.  Before you go is the time to button up any leaks, replace brake pads if needed.

If your camper is long, then i'd look at a load stabalizer.  If you test hookup your camper and it sags a little worrisome, you can get a helper setup.  There is a few different options.  There's overload assist springs, and load air bags.  These will keep your truck sitting level, improving handling and braking.

We are looking at 16-18 ft hard body campers but have yet to buy. Thanks for the advice on the cooler and air bags. We just want to make sure we aren't pinching holes in the seats when we drive through the mountains.

In that case you won't really need a load stabalizer, but a overload assist might be worth looking into.  It will make the drive that much easier.

In my opinion, if you plan on pulling something with brakes, it is too heavy for that truck. Give Maggie a rest and buy her a big sister for the heavy haul. Again, just my opinion.

Put me in the 75% of max towing camp.  I pushed a Nissan Murano to max (3500# including passengers etc) and got rewarded with a burnt tranny smell after only 20 miles of driving.  It has that high-dollar-to-replace CVT which didn't help matters, but still...it's supposed to handle it.  Don't believe it.  Traded it (within a week) for our current 2007 Frontier (6100# cap) and never looked back!  Take it from someone who's been there: Overkill (meaning extra tow cap) is piece of mind when you're going down the road betting your family's vacation on not having any problems.  Good luck and enjoy!

i am a complete newbie to the forum scene but i have done a whole lot of light duty (vehicles up to 3/4 ton) hauling all over the country. first off, if you are going to tow, add a trans cooler, no question. secondly, don't worry as much about what your vehicle can pull as much as what it can stop! make sure you have adequate brakes for that oh @#$% situation.  as for the actual pulling, i recommend what i call the kick-down test. you said you were still shopping for your rv. talk to the dealer and take you potential buy for a little road test if they will let you. get on the interstate and set your cruise on 65mph in tow gear. if your truck downshifts on a 5-second hill (5 seconds driving from start of incline to plateau) you need more truck.  if it can make it through an 8 second hill you should be ok. anywhere in-between, you will have to trust your judgement on how the vehicle handles the load. i don't know if that helps you any, but that is how i judge my tow vehicles.
