my 02 xe 4 cylinder manual says towing anything over 1000 pounds needs trailer brakes. do you really need them? any experiences? Just pulling a bike trailer and a 700 pound bike.

I would seem to me that whether or not you need trailer brakes is more of a function of the law than the vehicle - within reasonable limits.  In Ontario, you don't have to have brakes unless the trailer is over 3000 lb gross.  I have a 10x6 trailer I use to get hay and a full load is about the limit.  I haven't used my Frontier yet (season's coming!) but my last truck hauled it just fine.

..

There are cars that can stop in 120 feet at 60 MPH... That is 88 feet per second. With no brakes on the trailer it could take twice as far to stop. Whenyou see his brake lights light up you might travel over 320 feet before you are stopped. If you hit him ... you or your estate are buying.

Have a good one and see you later… Don S..

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State .

A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer! One took my wife!... J/K
