I want to install a external cooler for auto tranny and a HD Transmission precooler.  The local Nissan dealership doen't offer this service.  I live in Atlanta  GA can anybody recommend a place to have this done?  Or at least some information on how to look for this service in the yellow pages.  Thank-you   2006 Frontier 4x2

..

gonvales2000;

I installed my t-cooler in front of the radiator before I realized it was not the best place for it. I know every one else installs them there but it’s not good for the A/C or engine cooling system.

The job of the add on cooler is to help dissipate heat but why put this additional heat in front of the radiator and in front of the air conditioning condenser?

Most modern vehicles are operating at temperatures over two hundred degrees and are being taxed to handle the added heat of transmissions under a heavy load. So in many cases the oil is going back into the transmission too hot. The life of the automatic transmission relies on the life of the oil and the additives in the oil and heat shortens the life of the oil and the additives in them.
... Add on coolers should be used as pre-coolers in series with the cooling core in the radiator. An after-cooler would cool the transmission oil better but still put too much heat into the engine coolant as well as be too cool in the winter.

TIP: I have noticed many stock cooling lines need to be insulated from headers and pipes.... I shielded my cooling lines with a scrap piece of aluminum.

... First look for a mounting place away from the exhaust system. Look for mounting places under the bed. The cooler will dissipate a lot of heat even without much air flow because the oil will be VERY hot when the transmission is under a load. For HD towing a small 12 volt fan could be installed.

... On top of many front skid plates are good mounting spots. Mount the cooler in the hot out-put line between the transmission and radiator and it and it will be a pre-cooler. I used a clear piece of hose connected to the in and out cooling lines to find out which was which. After connecting the clear hose have someone start the engine while you watch to see which way the bubbles flow to tell which line is which.

The Pre Cooler will reduce the frequency of needed automatic transmission fluid changes.

... I mounted my pre-cooler to the top of the front skid shield (passenger side behind the radiator) on my wife’s V-8 ‘99 Grand Cherokee. I noticed later there was a nice safe place under the body behind the drivers seat.

BTW... In the picture there is a wire window screen to keep big bugs out of the cooling coils. The sceen can cause overheating but has not so far... it's removable.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Why is it that the politicians in D.C. are the only ones that don’t know there are better things to make Ethanol out of than corn?…  Answer… They know! They know! Guess why they don’t correct the problem.

gonvales2000;

I will recomend S&H Auto Clinic on Graves street in Pantego (Arlington) Texas. Or I would show you how to do it and lone you the tools in my driveway...

 Have a good one and see you later… Don S..

It would be nice if all our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State . A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer!

Thank you both for the reply.  I will be looking for a auto clinic in my area that will hopefully do this.  If not we will be driving our travel  trailer next week thru Texas on the way to San Diego CA.  We will call first and stop at S&H Auto Clinic to have the work done.  Thank-you Lakota for the offer to help install the fan but my husband will not cross the line in to repairing anything to do with engine of the car.  We are both retired and we work full time taking care of our rental properties. I heard some one say years ago after retireing he works more than ever.  Its so true being on a fixed income instead of hiring someone to do the work to save the money you do the work your self.  I have no idea how to add my vechile description to my signature.  Take care

I think I can type in your information into your SIG. Give me your Vehicle, city and state and I'll give it a try. As Moderator I'm supposed be able to do it but I've never tried it yet.

Retired here also. I have problems getting up off the ground but I still do to oil and filter and a few other things myself.  The frountier and Jeep are easy... the cars are more difficult. If it's not done correctly I know who to blame!

 Have a good one and see you later… Don S..

Lakota, I too am retired.  Just took my Aleve for the day and also know about how hard it is to "get off the ground."  I still do routine maintenance on my vehicles but let the dealer or a trusted garage handle larger issues.

I am a retired organic chemist and spent 10 years teaching college chemistry and 27 years in industry.

gonvales2000;

To do your SIG…

Look in your last post and left click ‘profile’, scroll down to the bottom then left click ‘edit this members profile’ then left click on ’profile information' then scroll down to the bottom to the signature box and type it in. There is a character limit. Then left click’update profile’

... S&H clinic said the installtion charge would be 1.5 hours and I think the rate is about $85.00 per hour plus parts. You really should have a extra cooler when pulling a trailer.

Lakota Have a good one and see you later… Don S..

A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer! One even took my wife!... J/K
