Since I live in the Northeast and in the winter the deposit of salt and
calcium from winter driving has almost consumed my steel spare
tire. After a visit to the salvage yard, I found another replacement.
While the issue of driving in the winter is a problem as the amount of
salt placed onto the roads simply eats most steel away. I noticed the
space between the frame and the bed area and began to look at
other methods of keeping the salt deposits to a minimum. Besides,
the sheet metal surrounding the gas tank pipe that mounts to the
fender is rusting badly from the salt.
After a little research, I found out that Husky Rear Wheel Well Guard
Flaps (their terminology) better known as plastic fender liners from a
2017-18 F-250 fits inside of the rear fenders of Nissan
Frontiers...2005 and on. I used some wood clamps to attach it to the
frame in order to mark the plastic so I could trim it up to fit. All I had
to do was to use a 2" wide strip of aluminum cut it about 2ft long
from Home Cheapo, drill a hole to the bed mount bracket on one end
of the frame and using an existing frame hole and a piece of PVC
pipe as a spacer, I was able to use galvanized bolt for the other end.
A couple of holes into the aluminum strip to use a few of those
plastic buttons sold in the auto parts store and the existing hole for
the rear mudguards it looks like factory and can be removed if
needed. The idea of using a piece of aluminum negates the need to
drill into the frame and spacing it out about 5/8" clears the leaf spring
and associated parts. I did this on my dual cab short bed and will
make some modifications to fit the extended cab long bed.
