HI there
New member and potential new Frontier owner. I have a 2002 Altima and 2009 G37x - so am a big Nissan fan. I really like the looks of the Frontier but the mpg lags behind others, esp. Tacoma. I have read rumors of possible new engine choices for 2013. Anyone have any insight on that?

Thanks!

..

Sorry but my cry-stole ball ain't working. A guess is 2014 or 15.

More power (Frontier)  means less (Tacoma) fuel milage.

Cost less (Frontier)  Cost more (Tacoma)

Better ride (Frontier) Sore back (Tacoma)

If Taco's turn you on you need to go for it! ..

Good Luck.. Don S..

I'd agree with the timeline of 2014-2015. Nissan is
already releasing concepts for a new pathfinder which is
built on the same platform as the Xterra, Frontier, and
Titan.

With dropping plans to build the Titan along side the Ram
they've had to rethink the plans. The Titan hasn't had a
single change since it's initial release other than to
fix engineering problems. So I would expect the Frontier
to change right along with it's bigger brother.

Thankfully Nissan's change will have a lot more to it
than Toyota's recent change with their Tacoma. It's
pissed off quite a few of us who own the X-runners with
their body changes and nothing done about some of the
problems. As I pointed out

[They didn't even bother to change the rear of the
truck... this is literally a last minute

"oh crap we need to redesign the Tacoma, we spent so much
time on the recalls and problems we forgot about it. Hmm
what to do? I know, just slap the front end of the 4-
runner on it and play with the interior, who's up for
chinese?"]

Could it be that truck shoppers often don't do a lot of homework? My experience of researching and driving both newer Tacomas and Frontiers wound up with no contest: FRONTIER WINS!

Of course I am a manual shift driver who enjoys driving performance; that makes a difference. And I still mourn my handsome Lunar Mist Metallic '00 Tacoma - daily - whose frame was one of those that rusted out. At least I enjoyed him for almost 12 years. RIP. And I must acknowledge Toyota's honorable buy-back program. I really would have bought another Tacoma but just what others are saying - lot more money for a truck that used to be small but ate too much. And then there is the disgusting sloppy performance of the clutch with hydraulic assist, yecccch.

My father in law has a 2007 taco, extra cab, a basic 4X2 truck and he only gets 20 MPG. He has the 2.7L engine 4 banger. This is not a prerunner, just the basic truck, 5 speed manual.

I debated between Taco and Frontier, and Frontier was better hands down. The price even helped, over 5 grand cheaper than the similiarly equipped Taco. At the time the MPG per the window sticker was 1MPG less for Nissan which upon further online review, I found that that Toyota's highway MPG was like 19.6 rounded up to 20, as indicated on the window sticker. Frontier was 19.4 on the highway, rounded to 19. At .2 mpg difference, that did not play into my decision.
I am curious if the Ford F150 really gets 23mpg as advertised... and thought a 2.4L nissan 4 banger would get better MPG than a taco 2.7L?

Toyota's big problem is ever since they beat out GM
they've lost sight at what got them there. The biggest
thing that rubbed those of us on the X-runner forum is
the obvious blind eye they gave to some of Tacoma's
problems. They literally did nothing but a face lift on
the new 2012s. Nissan seems to listen to feedback.

We went ahead and bought a Xterra now while we still love
the body design. With the talk of redesigning the
platform, it's obvious they're going to change the body.
IMO Nissan's designs tend to be hit and miss.

If I had to personally narrow to what I like more... well
it's simple

Toyota's body design
Nissan's drivetrain

I have a Tacoma and my Frontier. If you want a car with a plastic box, (oh excuse me, "composite box") then Tacoma is the way to go, if you want a midsize TRUCK, better get a Frontier. I like the Tacoma, don't get me wrong, but dollar per dollar value, Frontier has it beat hands down.
