Hi I'm looking into buying a 2001 frontier xe with a 3.3 v6 and was
wondering if I should look for anything in particular that goes out on
them I live in an area of California that has lots of dirt roads and will
be using this truck for work as a carpenter which will require lots of
off roading. The truck I'm going to look at is a 5 speed 4x4. Thanks
in advance

I just bought a 03 with the 3.3 and five speed and the only problem I have with it so far is the a/c stop working a few days after I got it. One of the a/c lines has a leak in it. Other than that I love the truck it runs great and has bout 100500 miles on it and no other problems that I know of.

I bought an 02 Frontier XE 3.3L 5spd manual and currently have 145K miles on it and still running strong. Check the obvious things: frame (is it rusted) probably not but I live in NE and they love salt in the winter. Maintenance records if the individual has them. Has the timing belt been replaced? Has the clutch been replaced? Does it transition smoothly from 2WD to 4WD Hi to N to 4WD Lo and back again? Is the SES light on? Check the oil, is it black? How many miles? Why are you selling it? Make sure all the instruments work. Check the air filter, is it dirty? When was the last tune up? The only thing that doesn't go out that I've noticed is the SES light. Doesn't affect anything though on my truck anyways (I know what the codes are). Make sure the truck is COLD STARTED. Some of these like to develop a chatter/ticking upon cold start that goes away in about 5 seconds. I can't really think of anything that just goes out, truck has been very reliable, never broke down or have had any issues and I've put about 55K miles on it. If it has been maintained and treated right it should be good for 200K+.
