Yesterday I took delivery of a white 2008 Nissan Frontier model D 22 (4 door) with 5 kilometers on the odometer. It was imported to Colombia from Japan, came with factory air and apart from that is very bare bones. I had the dealer install electric windows. There is no consul whatsoever between the front bucket seats, just floor. My daily drive home involves driving about nine miles up a mountain with the last two miles on rough unpaved road. With a supposed 150 hp from the 2.4 motor I had hopes of perceiving a power boost over 126 hp of my old Mazda with 2.6 motor. Very dissapointingly for me this did not seem to be the case. In fact the vehical seemed slightly under powered in comparison. There are a couple of factors that may be in play. First the Mazda required premium fuel (lousy gas here) while the Nissan according to the dealer is fine with regular and thatīs what I filled the tank with. Another factor may be gearing. I havenīt sat down and compared the ratios but the driving impression is that there is more distance between second and third on the Nissan making the engine lug more and having less punch while trying to stay in third. The Mazda seemed to be more "on cam" in third and pulled more strongly up the mountain. Another dissapointing comparison was the ride on the unpaved section. The Mazda seemed to have more suspencion travel making the ride over the rough sections more tolerable. The Nissan has my stomach giggling uncomfortably to a much greater extent. My overall impression so far is dissapointment. I specifically chose the Nissan 4 door over the Mazda 4 door (my Mazda was a 2 door stake bed) based on horsepower. Maybe with the engine broken in and maybe with premium gas Iīll note a difference, that is if the gearing isnīt working against me. Another gripe, no version of Mazda 4x4 truck comes without electric auto hubs. My Nissan came with manual hubs. I havenīt had to get out and loock the hubs since my ī74 F-250 Ford.
