Now that  my  drive  train warranty expired, I rolled the dice. I use Amsoil Full Synthetic ATF in my Frontier.  If you're still under warranty I would continue to use the Nissanmatic "J" like they say, just to keep yourself clean.  But after the warranty is up, why not?  The Amsoil is cheaper than "J" by four bucks a quart, it runs cooler (especially while towing), gives you 50,000 mile change intervals if you tow, and 100,000 mile change interval if you don't tow.  Don't live in fear of your service manager.  If you're past the warranty, the Amsoil is where it's at.  Nissan corporate guys, I'm not buying any today, I have plenty all over my horse pasture.

BTW, I'm 15,000 miles into using the Amsoil ATF, and it runs better now than it did when it was new.  Pls skip the "I knew this guy once and he used Amsoil..." stories. < ="text/">_popupControl();

Wow.  Another "testimony" from an Amsoil dealer!

This is a BIG MISTAKE.  Nissan transmissions are very picky & sensitive to fluid and Nissan expressly states that use of anything other than what is called for (for 05+ Frontiers it is Matic J, or at least it was in my 06 SE 4x4 A/T) will void the warranty.

I strongly advice using only Nissan recommended fluid in the Transmission, Trans case, Diffs, etc.

Well I don't give a rat's *** what Nissan says.  I'm past the warranty.  Are you a service manager or parts guy?  I strongly recommend Amsoil, and I'm not a dealer.  The facts are in for me.  The performance is much better.  Hey, go pay Nissan 250 for a fluid change.  I could care less.  But I thought there might be some other independent thinkers who know that Nissan is blowing smoke. < ="text/">_popupControl();

Message For Boomer:

Amsoil Dealer?  Do you think I'd wear one of those Amsoil hats, too?  Bad assumption, my friend, about being an Amsoil dealer.  Licensed professional in the health care field, could care less about selling oil.  I value my off-time.

Stop living in fear of your service manager.  If you're past the warranty, let them rant and rave.

Wow Jake -- take things a little personally?

Amsoil offers minimal to no improved performance over conventional synthetics (which is what Nissan uses/calls for by the way).  In fact, I've seen a few tests over the years where Royal Purple or Mobil1 proved superior to Amsoil (and all other oils in the test).  If you want to think Amsoil is so great, go right ahead -- just don't get upset when people disagree.

I was just recommending that the other people on this board at least consider what the manufacturer recommends.

If it was me, I wouldn't (and don't) roll the dice on my ~$3000 transmission.

Here is a dealer price that you can use to negotiate with your dealer.  I did and Nissan matic J is indeed affordable.MyNismo.com - NISSAN Matic-J Automatic Transmission Fluid

This forum is a Nissan-sponsored site, I'll bet money on it.  Therefore, there will be corporate nannies to "guide" you in the direction of your local Nissan dealer, whether it is the parts counter, or the service department.  Nissan owes me nothing (except to keep providing part support) and I owe Nissan nothing.

I have been using Amsoil products for the last 6 years in everything that has any orifice whatsoever.  I have not had a problem with any of them.  I also love the extended drain intervals on just about all Amsoil products. So go ahead and follow the man to your Nissan dealer.  I AM NOT an AMSOIL salesman, either.  Nor do I know any.  The guy who gets overrides on my purchases gets a blow-off when he calls.

If you live nearby, you can drive my truck and see for yourself the improved performance.  You can also pull some ATF out and see for yourself that it didnt' turn black or brown, didn't burn, doesn't smell cooked, or turn my truck into a Yugo.
