I just picked my new 08 Crew Cab 4wd LE long bed today. Great so far but just getting to know the truck. I checked this site out and thought I did some extesive research and decided on this truckmover the Tacoma and knew In was going to sacrafice a little fuel mileage, but this inn my opinion is more of truck. I traded my low mileage F-150 thinking this will haul what I needed and save some gas at the same time.

One big thing I missed and was shocked when I read the manual is that Nissan reccomends 91 octane fuel. Here in NC all premium is 93 and the cost 20 cents plus per gallon. Has anyone ran regular or mid grade in their vehicles and what has been the result? Do you see much performance difference? Any knocking? and would using different fuel violate the warranty? Any feedback would be greatly apreciated.

See my posts under "Mileage" just below your new post.  There are figures for my 2007 Crew Cab on premium.  Around town, I generally use 89 octane with an occasional fill-up of high test.  I get about the same city mileage.  On hiway, I use hi-test because I generally am hitting steep hills and hauling my hunting buddy, his 100 pound dog and hunting gear.  I know some folks who run regular in this engine but I would not want to do that.

Manual definitely says 91.  I didn't realize that and had been running 87 and had been getting 20 mpg.  I've been running 93 since and mileage has gone down consistently to 17 mpg.  Go figure.

Manual only says you may notice a decrease in performance (I didn't).  It doesn't say not to do it.

Darren, your experience is opposite to mine.  Lower octane, lower gas mileage.  I'll keep checking over time and post when I have some more meaningful figures.  Right now, being retired, I work part-time two half days a week and drive about 2 miles each way on a cold engine.  Not the best scenario for measuring mileage!

I agree.  You'd think just the opposite.  My driving is very consistent.  It's 18 miles each way to work and it's 95% highway with the cruise on.  I guess technically you could round the 17 up to 18 but either way it's a decrease.

Sorry bro, but you are wrong.

http://www.nissanusa.com/pdf/techpubs/frontier/2007/2007-Nis san-
Frontier.pdf

Do a search (ctrl F on PC or apple F on mac) on that bad boy for 'octane.'
It specifically says anything with 87 octane or higher.

Not to throw anymore fuel on the fire, but looking at www.nissanhelp.com (not sure if that's officially affiliated with Nissan Motors, Nissan NA or not) when looking at the specs for the 05/07/08 Frontys, when you scroll down to the fuel economy section, it states Recommended Fuel: Regular Unleaded

Well, Web site or not, my owners manual clearly states 91 octane is recommended and that I can use a lower octane if this is not available.  Driving an engine with high compression on too low an octane can cause damage over time from uncontrolled combustion issues (pinging, knocking, etc)   While the engine timing system can retard itself with the aid of a knock sensor to help in this area, the compression will remain the same regardless of timing.

that "website" that i posted is a direct link to YOUR OWNERS MANUAL -- a 2007 nissan frontier -- where it clearly states 87 octane.
