Ok guys. Its game time. I'm in the market for a Frontier. Before I go shopping, I have a few questions:

How much better is the 4.0 liter over the 3.3? Is it worth the extra money for a newer model?

How capable is the 2wd vs. 4wd? Stupid question I know, but I want to see if having a 2wd will keep me from doing casual off-roading.

What are certain things I should look for and watch out for?

Thanks in advance for the guidance!!

So far the 4.0L has been able to outperfrom the VG33E, but it is early to tell.

The 4.0L is a better choice than the 2.5 which has had oil issues since it started out in the Altima.

I take it you're in the market for something brand new?

(btw I moved your topic to a section that would get more notice.)

Haha thanks! I'm still learning the forum setup.

4 cylinder (2.4 or 2.5) is just not an option for me. I need the towing capacity and I require more power than the average Joe Schmo.

I'm thinking I'll be going Automatic, even though I prefer a clutch. This is going to be my daily, and shifting another car all day may tax my sanity.

I am not really looking for new, as I'd rather buy something that has already marginally depreciated. That way I won't find myself upside down.

I understand not wanting another manual.  I currently have 4 vehicles sitting at my house with manuals, 2 of which I drive.

00 Ford F-250 w/ 6spd, 88 Camaro w/ 5spd, 90 Maxima w/5spd (currently down for motor build up) and 85 Nissan 720 pickup w/5spd (currently replacing head gasket)

The wife is the lucky one with the automatic Highlander.

What exactly do you plan on towing?

I'll be towing my Z to shows in Cali. So I need about 4000 lbs of towing at least. My Z weighs just under 3000 pounds and the trailer is under 1000.

I would recommend something bigger.  The truck can pull it, but stopping is a big factor to consider.  A Titan or similar should be what you're looking for.

Definitly go with the 4.0. Maybe even the Titan.

i'd get something bigger IF you are going to regularly tow that much weight.

if you do it 1-4 times a year, the frontier shouldn't have any troubles.  but if you want to do it more often than that, go ahead and step up to a full size.  i'd look at f150, silverado, & titan as they are all good trucks.  f150s can be dirt cheap too, my uncle picked up a used 03 4x4 ex cab for 16k w/ only 20k on it not that long ago, and it tows like 8 or 9,000lbs I think.
